Could Deadpool (and Wolverine) be Marvel’s chosen hero, destined to rescue a once-mighty franchise from fading into obscurity? It’s possible, but don’t put all your faith in that outcome – simply appreciate it for what it is: a surprisingly heartfelt bloodbath that gently puts the past to rest (well, mostly).
Despite the challenges faced by MCU movies in recapturing the excitement of its early years since the release of Endgame, there is always something that revives fans’ optimism. Whether it’s the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or the second season of Loki, Marvel continues to reignite hope among its dedicated followers.
This movie can be likened to Spider-Man: No Way Home, whether that be a positive or negative comparison. It is daring, moving, and incredibly entertaining, but it also has its flaws and its unexpected twists – “don’t forget your lucky sock”because there are many – provide a fleeting rush of excitement that will eventually fade.
Despite the need for a hero in the MCU, neither Deadpool nor Wolverine can be its savior. While their success may bring Kevin Feige great wealth, their characters are too chaotic and unique to be a template for future films. However, this is also a positive aspect as their success lies in breaking away from traditional norms and pushing boundaries.
Deadpool and Wolverine Search for Purpose in a Meaningless World
The Merc with a Mouth is known for his irreverent nature. The challenge lies in finding a way to ground a character who constantly breaks the fourth wall and exists outside the world of traditional storytelling.
Despite its paradoxical nature, the combination of Deadpool and Wolverine proves to be effective. The movie begins with Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) feeling dissatisfied with life. Despite Peter’s (Rob Delaney) objections, he has given up on being a superhero and instead sells used cars, while also wallowing over the fact that Vanessa (Monica Baccarin) is now in a relationship with someone else.
Without warning, he is abruptly taken away from his world and finds himself in the Time Variance Authority (if you haven’t seen Loki, it’s fine – they are responsible for regulating time and preventing alternate timelines). Mr. Paradox (Matthew MacFadyen), a top TVA agent with an unconventional idea, offers Wade the one thing he desires most: a sense of purpose, for the betterment of all.
I will refrain from discussing the stakes and their implications, but I will mention one thing: it entails partnering with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), following the usual rough play, fighting, and bickering, as they come face to face with Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin).
The story effectively embodies the concept of multiversal madness, something that is more prominent in the film than its title suggests. The cameos are highly enjoyable, and it seems that Feige has disregarded all traditional rules for this particular project.
Despite the comical moments, the true sentiment lies in its deep fondness for the past Fox era. It serves as a farewell to a time rendered obsolete by its shortcomings and a tribute to the progress it brought. The final chapter serves as a testament to the legacy it leaves behind.
Deadpool: Getting an R rating
Despite its superhero themes, this film is not suitable for younger audiences – it’s a hard-R rating. There is a brutal scene where an adamantium claw is used as a spitroast and another character has their flesh torn off. And if that isn’t enough to convince you (it definitely will), there is also a significant amount of blood throughout. It’s safe to say that the MCU has never been this graphic and it’s uncertain if we’ll ever see something like this again.
Credit must be given to Shawn Levy for his exceptional choreography in the film. The interaction between Deadpool and Wolverine showcases the highest level of performance from both characters. It strikes a perfect balance between being intense and humorous, unyielding yet funny. Fans have been anticipating this showdown on the big screen for a long time, and it definitely lives up to all the expectations and excitement.
While the third act may feel a bit disjointed, there is one particularly impressive and gory long take that stands out. However, the cinematography falls short, lacking depth and appearing dull and even amateurish at times. While some may not prioritize color grading, I believe it is important, especially when considering the large budget of over $200 million for major blockbuster films. We should expect more from such high-budget productions.
Despite its crudeness, juvenile humor, and frequent use of profanity, the script for Deadpool is exactly what you would expect. While the constant meta references may not always hit the mark, the fourth-wall jokes that do land are truly hilarious. Additionally, the banter between Reynolds and Jackman is some of the funniest material either actor has ever delivered.
Jackman and Reynolds are sensational
However, let me clarify that this is not a criticism. The movie is intended for adults, but it is also suitable for teenagers and children. If I were 15 years old, I would have laughed so hard that tears would have rolled down my face. Now, I still found it amusing, but my laughter was mostly limited to a few snorts.
Despite often feeling like he is constantly seeking attention, Deadpool manages to avoid becoming a one-dimensional character, a fear that he struggles with throughout the film. This evolution of his character is heartwarming, as it reveals a vulnerable side beneath his constant sarcasm, making him more relatable and three-dimensional than ever before.
Despite the cliché, Reynolds’ charisma is largely responsible for the success of his portrayal of Deadpool, as it seems he was born for the role. It is truly remarkable how he is able to infuse sincerity into the character’s constant chatter.
Despite initial concerns from Logan fans (myself included) about Jackman’s involvement, his return to the role is a dream come true. His portrayal of Wolverine is one of the most iconic in pop culture history, and both Deadpool and Wolverine pay homage to it.
(Although it may be a brief indulgence, the film succeeds in two major aspects: we are able to admire Jackman’s incredibly muscular Wolverine physique once again, and the moment when he dons his mask evokes a feeling similar to the return of Christ.)
Deadpool and Wolverine Review
The MCU experience featuring Deadpool and Wolverine is a must-see; it is filled with excitement, gore, and unexpected emotional moments. Despite any flaws, the nostalgia and unadulterated happiness you will experience in the theater will overshadow them. In simpler terms, let’s get ready for an incredible ride.
