Final Fantasy 14 Director Denies Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 Remake

During the Dawntrail media tour, Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida has clarified that his team is not currently working on a remake of Final Fantasy 9, dispelling any rumors that may have arisen due to mistranslations of his interviews.

Despite not being officially announced, the Final Fantasy 9 remake has been confirmed by various sources on the Internet, making it one of the industry’s worst-kept secrets. It was first mentioned in the Nvidia GeForce Now leak.

During the Dawntrail media tour, interviews revealed that Yoshida’s team at Creative Studio 3 is currently developing multiple games. This sparked speculation that one of these projects may be a remake of Final Fantasy 9.

During a Letter from the Producer on the Final Fantasy XIV YouTube channel on June 14, Yoshida addressed the rumors and refuted any involvement with remakes.

During the Live Letter, Yoshida’s translator clarified that Yoshida is not currently involved in any Final Fantasy 9 remake projects. The translator expressed admiration for the beloved title and acknowledged that many are fans of the original Final Fantasy 9. However, they noted that the game is quite large and may have even more content than Final Fantasy 7, making the scale of a potential remake significantly different.

“He cautioned, “We must exercise caution and be mindful if we were to take on the responsibility of handling Final Fantasy 9.”

Despite not being involved in the development of the Final Fantasy 9 remake, Yoshida and his team are not ruling out the possibility of the game being in the works. The inclusion of references to Zidane and his friends in Dawntrail suggests that they may be planning to promote the remake once it is released.

Despite Square Enix’s Creative Studio 3 being occupied with several projects such as Final Fantasy 16, Dawntrail, and updates for Final Fantasy 14, there is still potential for other studios to take on the task of remaking Final Fantasy 9 for modern systems.
