On August 31st, Youn Yuh-jung made an appearance on the most recent episode of MBC’s “Son Seok-hee’s Questions.”
Son Seok-hee, a cousin of Youn’s neighbor and the host of the event, shared, “When you received the award, the entire neighborhood proudly displayed a banner in celebration of having a world-renowned actress among us.”Youn expressed her gratitude, saying, “After a long and challenging journey, I returned home to find a banner with familiar handwriting. It filled me with a sense of pride and love for my community.”
As the presenter of the Academy Awards next year, Youn has been asked to wear a ribbon to show support for war refugees at the event. She explained, “The organizers recommended that I wear it, and I also chose to wear it because I am a refugee from North Korea.”When Son asked about potential criticism for the political statement, Youn responded, “But aren’t we all inherently political?”
“Youn reflected on her retrospective exhibition, which was organized by the U.S. Academy Award. She mentioned that the venue had a capacity of 1,000 seats, and she was informed that 700 people had already reserved their spots. She also expressed her admiration for the Korean American attendees, noting that she was particularly impressed by Director Lee Seong-jin, who served as the host for the event. Knowing the struggles and sacrifices they must have made to reach such success, Youn felt overwhelmed and grateful to have their support. She also shared that she has become somewhat of a godmother figure to Korean-American directors, often being invited to their debuts.”
The actress will continue her work in the U.S. for her next film. “Although I have not yet signed a contract, it will also be a Korean American movie,” Youn revealed. “There is a rumor that I am collaborating with Korean American directors, and now even German Koreans are approaching me. This opportunity will help me become a global star,” Youn expressed about her involvement with Korean-American directors. She added, “I have always felt fulfilled when I am able to assist others. It brings me great joy to be able to contribute in this way.”
