Players of Black Ops 6 are encountering an exasperating issue where their screen goes entirely black when initiating a multiplayer or Zombies match. Fortunately, there are a few potential remedies to address this problem.
The latest installment by Treyarch in the Call of Duty franchise is experiencing tremendous popularity, with millions of gamers engaging and appreciating the classic Zombies mode alongside the innovative omnimovement mechanics. However, not everything has been without hiccups, as a major complaint from players revolves around the sudden black screen that appears at the beginning of gameplay.
Resolving the BO6 Black Screen Issue
Game Restart
The most reliable method I’ve identified to tackle the black screen dilemma in Black Ops 6 is to restart the game. Admittedly, this is not the most convenient solution since you have to exit the match you’re currently in; however, reopening the application and searching for a new game can resolve the issue.
Another downside is that this appears to be a temporary workaround, as numerous players have reported re-encountering the same black screen problem several hours later, even after shutting down the game or restarting their consoles or PCs.
Update Your Graphics Driver
The root cause of this bug isn’t completely clear, but given the demanding nature of BO6, it could play a role. To help prevent this issue, ensuring that your graphics driver is up to date is a useful step. Here’s how to do it:
For AMD Users
- Open the AMD application on your computer.
- Select ‘Check for Updates.’
- If an update exists, download it immediately.
- Follow the instructions to complete the driver installation.
For Nvidia Users
- Launch or download the GeForce Experience application.
- Navigate to the Drivers tab and click ‘Check for Updates.’
- If an update is found, follow the provided instructions to update the driver.
Verify Game Files
If you frequently encounter the black screen issue, it’s possible that your Black Ops 6 installation may be corrupt.
In such cases, you might need to uninstall the application and reinstall it. While this process may take some time, it ensures that the game files are in proper working order.
Developers’ Response to the Black Screen Bug
On October 30, Treyarch took to X to announce that they are actively investigating the black screen glitch and are in search of a solution.
In their update, they stated, “We are investigating an issue where some players may encounter a black screen when loading into a public or private match for both Multiplayer and Zombies.”

While they haven’t provided a specific timeline for a fix, the fact that the developers are investigating the situation is an encouraging sign that a resolution is forthcoming.
It is hoped that this issue will be addressed before the launch of Black Ops 6 Season 1 on November 14, coinciding with the integration of the game into Warzone.
