Witchfire is now available on Steam after being exclusive to the Epic Store for a year. The game is still in early access and is expected to remain in this state for at least another year. As an Unreal Engine title, it does share some technical issues with other games built on the same engine, particularly if you have specific hardware. If you encounter the “Out of Video Memory” error while playing Witchfire, here are some solutions you can consider.
How to Fix the Witchfire Out of Video Memory Error
If you’re using a 13th or 14th generation Intel CPU, you may experience crashes accompanied by the “Out of Video Memory” error when playing Witchfire. This issue arises from the persistent instability problems associated with these CPU models, which Intel is addressing in collaboration with various motherboard manufacturers.
In the meantime, we suggest the following solutions to resolve the crash as Intel continues to work on a permanent fix.
Permanent Solution: Update BIOS to 0x12B Microcode Patch
The first step is to update your motherboard’s BIOS. Intel has released the 0x12B microcode patch in collaboration with many motherboard manufacturers, which should mitigate the issue in Unreal Engine 5 titles, albeit with a slight reduction in performance. While there may be a minor performance hit, users with these CPUs need to upgrade, as ongoing stability issues can lead to long-term deterioration.
Currently, this patch offers the best solution. Although updating your BIOS can be daunting, it is a proactive step for long-term stability, rather than relying on temporary fixes.
Temporary Fix: Use Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility
If you prefer not to update your BIOS, you can manually adjust the recommended PL1/PL2 limits for your CPU using Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility.
- Visit the official site to download Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility.
- Once installed, set the Performance Core Ratio from 57x to 55x or 54x and click Apply in Basic Tuning.
- Ensure that the utility is running in the background, which should help resolve the issue.
General Troubleshooting Steps
If you don’t own a CPU from this series, you can try the following general troubleshooting techniques.
- Update DirectX and Visual C++ Redistributables.
- If on a laptop, switch to your dedicated GPU.
- Update Windows to the latest version.
- Ensure you have the latest GPU drivers: NVIDIA, AMD, Intel.
- Verify your game files through the Steam or Epic Launcher client.
While these steps should reduce the occurrence of crashes, we strongly recommend opting for the BIOS update as the preferred solution. As highlighted, this issue is ongoing, and further updates will be necessary for 13th and 14th generation CPU users to play without concern. However, for those not using these problematic CPUs, Witchfire is an incredible gaming experience, and we had a lot of fun with it last year.
