Fixing Ultrawide Cutscene Issues in Silent Hill 2 Remake on PC

The Bloober Team has adeptly revived the 2001 masterpiece Silent Hill 2, originally crafted by KONAMI and Team Silent, in the newly launched remake. Utilizing the advanced Unreal Engine 5, this version showcases stunning visuals across all gaming platforms. However, the PC variant, while offering a multitude of adjustable settings and support for ultrawide screens, does present some challenges. Gamers have reported instances of traversal stuttering and letterboxing during cutscenes. Fortunately, a solution has been made available by Rose from the widescreen community, who created a patch to rectify this issue.

Resolving the Ultrawide Cutscenes Issue in Silent Hill 2 Remake

Rose’s patch effectively eliminates the letterboxing effect in the cutscenes of Silent Hill 2 Remake for those playing at ultrawide resolutions.

The installation process for the patch is quite straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Visit the GitHub page here
  • Download the patch by selecting Silent.Hill.2.Remake.widescreen.v1.0.zip under the assets section
  • Extract the contents into the directory where Silent Hill 2 Remake is installed:

\SHProto\Binaries\Win64\

After installation, start the game, and the cutscenes will now play seamlessly without black bars.

All appreciation goes to Rose for developing and testing the patch at various resolutions: 1920×1200, 2560×1080, and 3840×1080. Presently, there are no known issues, and the patch is functioning smoothly.

If you decide to revert the changes, simply delete the files that were extracted from the zip. Rose has also introduced a patch that removes the 30 FPS frame rate limit during cutscenes in Silent Hill 2 Remake, which pairs excellently with the ultrawide modification.

There is little chance that the developers will address the letterboxing in future patches, given that the cutscenes appear to have been designed with these black bars. Therefore, this patch is your optimal solution for enhancing your gameplay experience.

Additionally, to enhance visual quality further, it is advisable to disable chromatic aberration in Silent Hill 2 Remake, leading to a more refined and clearer image.
