Despite the excitement surrounding the return of Flappy Bird in 2024, its original creator, Dong Nguyen, has confirmed that he is not involved in the game’s comeback and has not sold the game’s license.
Flappy Bird was available for less than a year before Nguyen pulled it from both the App Store and Google Play on February 10, 2014. At that time, he expressed feeling guilty about the game’s addictive nature, which had taken the world by storm.
Following the announcement of the classic game’s revival, Nguyen dismissed rumors about selling the rights, stating that he has no connection to the new version.
On September 15, he addressed the matter via a concise post on his Twitter/X account.
“No, I have no relation with their game. I did not sell anything. I also don’t support crypto,” Nguyen stated.

According to a press release from the new developers, “The Flappy Bird Foundation Group and affiliates have acquired the official Flappy Bird trademark rights from Gametech Holdings LLC.”
The United States Patent and Trademark Office indicates that Gametech Holdings acquired the Flappy Bird trademark after it was terminated for inactivity.
There have also been several claims regarding the new version potentially incorporating cryptocurrency, following investigations by cybersecurity researcher Varun Biniwale, who reportedly discovered references to a “Flap Token.” In light of this, Nguyen reiterated that he does not support crypto.
At this stage, many aspects of the revamped Flappy Bird remain uncertain as we await further updates from the developers. What is clear, however, is that its original creator, Dong Nguyen, is not associated with this forthcoming release.
