Netflix Faces Lawsuit After Technical Issues During Paul vs. Tyson Fight
Following a significant glitch that disrupted the viewing experience for many fans during the highly publicized boxing match between Jake “El Gallo”Paul and “Iron”Mike Tyson, one California resident has taken legal action against Netflix. This event, streamed live, reportedly attracted a staggering 60 million viewers, marking it as one of the most-watched boxing matches in history.
Ronald Denton, a resident of Florida, filed a lawsuit against the streaming giant on November 18, citing damages linked to what he alleges is a breach of contract. Denton claims he encountered “legendary problems”including streaming failures, buffering, and lack of access to the event right at the moment he tuned in on Friday, November 15, at 8:00 PM.
Despite the widespread excitement around the match, Netflix experienced a significant system overload, prompting complaints from multiple users. In a recent tweet, the company acknowledged the technical difficulties, stating, “60 million households around the world tuned in live to watch Paul vs. Tyson! The boxing mega-event dominated social media, shattered records, and even had our buffering systems on the ropes.”

Internally, Netflix also acknowledged the shortcomings during this unprecedented event. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s Chief Technology Officer, remarked, “This unprecedented scale created many technical challenges, which the launch team tackled brilliantly by prioritizing stability of the stream for the majority of viewers. We don’t want to dismiss the poor experience of some members, and know we have room for improvement, but still consider this event a huge success.”
As the dust settles, Netflix is now facing legal scrutiny along with potential reputational challenges due to these technical failures. The outcome of Denton’s lawsuit may have broader implications for streaming services that host high-profile events in the future.
