Legal Action Follows Netflix Streaming Outage During Paul vs. Tyson Fight
Amid significant viewership for the recent boxing matchup between Jake ‘El Gallo’ Paul and ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, Netflix experienced a major crash, prompting a lawsuit from a disappointed fan. This highly anticipated event garnered more than 60 million viewers, setting a record as the most-watched boxing event streamed to date.
The Incident and Lawsuit Details
On November 18, Ronald Denton, a resident of Florida, took legal action against Netflix after encountering severe streaming issues while attempting to watch the fight. In court documents, Denton alleges unspecified damages, citing a breach of Netflix’s contractual obligations as one of his primary complaints.
According to Denton, when he attempted to join the event on November 15 at 8 PM, he encountered numerous technical issues that prevented him from accessing the stream. He described his experience as filled with disruptions such as buffering and connectivity glitches.
Netflix’s Response to the Outage
While the streaming giant has not publicly addressed Denton’s lawsuit specifically, they did acknowledge the widespread issues that arose during the Paul vs. Tyson fight. In a statement shared on social media, Netflix reported, “60 million households around the world tuned in live to watch Paul vs. Tyson! The boxing mega-event dominated social media, shattered records, and even had our buffering systems on the ropes.”

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Improvements
Following the significant backlash from upset viewers, Netflix issued an internal memo recognizing the need for improvement, despite deeming the fight a success overall. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s CTO, remarked, “This unprecedented scale created many technical challenges, which the launch team tackled brilliantly by prioritizing stability of the stream for the majority of viewers. We don’t want to dismiss the poor experience of some members and know we have room for improvement.”
As Netflix navigates the fallout from this streaming incident, they face not only the lawsuit from Denton but also heightened scrutiny over their ability to handle large-scale events effectively. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how streaming services manage their infrastructure during peak usage times moving forward.
