The discovery of ILLIT lip-syncing during their debut preparations has caused a wave of criticism and backlash.
Despite the release of their music video for “Lucky Girl Syndrome”, ILLIT remains one of the most controversial rookie groups in the world of K-pop. As they debuted under the prestigious HYBE Corporation, one of the largest entertainment companies, ILLIT was given a privileged start. The group impressed with their exceptional music and captivating visuals from the very beginning, showcasing the significant investment made by their management company. However, despite these advantages, ILLIT has faced various challenges.
This led to comparisons being drawn between NewJeans and ILLIT, as both groups shared similar lineups, ages, and concepts. As a result, ILLIT garnered negative attention from the public, with many accusing them of being a “counterfeit/copied group.”
Despite that, ILLIT has faced a major challenge with their vocal abilities. Even prior to being compared to NewJeans, the group received criticism for their inconsistent live singing skills. This was especially evident during encore performances, where the vocal limitations of the Japanese members, particularly the beloved Moka, were blatantly apparent. As a result, there was much mockery and doubt surrounding ILLIT’s capabilities.
Despite the backlash, the members quickly adopted lip-syncing for future activities. However, this decision proved to be problematic as member Wonhee was frequently caught not singing live and even forgetting to lip-sync her parts.
During their guest appearance on “Idol Radio,”Wonhee unintentionally missed her opening part while performing “Magnetic,”exposing the group’s dependence on the backing track from the very beginning.
Despite Wonhee forgetting to move the mic to her mouth during her “Baby don’t say no”part, the situation didn’t improve. This caused many to realize that they were not singing live. The members appeared shocked, with Moka’s reaction looking particularly flabbergasted. While the others were seen laughing, Wonhee froze for a moment before carrying on with the performance.
This event further intensified the existing criticisms against the group’s legitimacy and use of lip-syncing. Some assert that the group’s training should focus more on improving their live performances rather than relying on pre-recorded music.
Several comments were read,
- “Wonhee’s mistake just exposed the lip-sync from the start, thanks!”
- “It’s disappointing when idols go on shows, and you expect them to sing live but they lip-sync instead.”
- “Can they drop the cutesy act? If they can’t sing well, at least perform properly.”
- “The comments are harsh but true, what else can we expect from their live vocals?”
- “Her visuals might be good, but how did Wonhee ever win from that survival show with those skills?”
- “ILLIT seems very manufactured. Despite good music and high achievements, there’s no distinct individuality in the group.”
