Initially receiving a poor Rotten Tomatoes score, a movie featuring Pedro Pascal was forgotten, but it has now found a resurgence of popularity as it rises on the Netflix top 10 chart.
It is a common occurrence for movies that initially failed at the box office to experience success once they are released on Netflix. This is evident in the case of Samuel L. Jackson’s Unthinkable, which went from being a flop at the box office to becoming a streaming hit. Similarly, the poorly reviewed film On the Line starring Mel Gibson quickly climbed the top 10 chart on the streaming platform.
What is a common characteristic among these movies? They often feature notable names as the main cast. This trend continues with the upcoming 2016 film The Great Wall, which stars well-known figures such as Pedro Pascal from The Last of Us and Matt Damon from the Bourne series.
After being released on the streaming service on Wednesday (May 1), Zhang Yimou’s monster flick quickly climbed to the third spot on the chart. Below, you can see the current list in its entirety:
- Anyone But You
- The Judge
- The Great Wall
- Blended
- Miller’s Girl
- Girls Trip
- Smurfs: The Lost Village
- Mortal Kombat
- The Equalizer
- Hellboy
Despite receiving a low Rotten Tomatoes score of 35% from critics and 42% from audiences, The Great Wall has still been successful, although many have pointed out that the film lacks substance.
According to The Guardian, there is little distinction between this and other Hollywood action adventures, despite the nods to Chinese culture. IndieWire was more direct, stating that the film is simply terrible, rather than an example of Hollywood whitewashing.
The narrative takes place during ancient times in China and centers around a band of hired soldiers who journey to the nation in pursuit of gunpowder. However, their plans are disrupted when they become embroiled in the protection of the Great Wall against a swarm of terrifying creatures. Starring alongside Pascal and Damon are Jing Tian, Willem Dafoe, and Andy Lau.
Despite its low Rotten Tomatoes score, The Great Wall has certainly captured the attention of viewers. While acknowledging its flaws, one viewer shared on X that they found it to be entertaining. Another confessed that their sole reason for watching the film was because Pedro Pascal was in it.
