Former 4th-Generation Girl Group Member Discusses Why Idols’ Voices Change After Debuting

A former member of a fourth-generation girl group has revealed the reason behind why some idols’ voices may deteriorate after their debut.

On May 15, 2024, Denise, a former member of the group SECRET NUMBER, shared her thoughts on why some idols may experience a decline in their singing abilities after debut in a TikTok video. She clarified that this is not a universal occurrence and was merely her personal perspective from her time as an idol.

One primary reason is that the songs are not created specifically for the idols. According to her explanation, the idols generally do not have a voice in the selection of the music they release, as their companies make the final decision. Typically, companies prioritize the concept over whether it suits the vocal capabilities of the idols.

If any issues with the vocals were encountered, the band would address them during the recording process. They would then rehearse for future live performances or opt to not sing live at all. However, this can become problematic once they begin performing live. It is worth noting that even talented singers may struggle with songs outside of their range or style.

In addition, Denise emphasized that K-pop is not just about singing, but also about the choreography. As a result, idols typically prioritize their performance over their vocals.

Denise also brought up the importance of vocal health. She shared instances where she had been feeling under the weather, yet still had to perform on stage. She was always honest with her audience, even recalling a time when she was informed that they would be singing live instead of lip-syncing. She remembers being taken aback and quickly warming up her voice just two minutes before her performance.

As a celebrity, experiencing fatigue and exhaustion can greatly affect one’s vocal abilities. The throat is a highly delicate area of the body, which is why it often becomes sore and painful when one is feeling ill.

Moreover, Denise pointed out that idols often have limited time for practicing or receiving additional lessons when they are being promoted. In the waiting room, some idols utilize the hours they are there to warm up their voices. However, for inexperienced and lesser-known groups, they typically have to share waiting rooms. As a result, they are obliged to remain quiet out of consideration for others, leaving them unable to properly prepare their voices for live performances.

Denise’s ultimate argument is that certain idols simply do not have strong singing abilities. She acknowledges that in the world of K-pop, vocal talent is not always the top priority for companies. Ultimately, K-pop is a business and companies are looking for well-rounded performers. Unfortunately, for some individuals, singing is just not their forte, no matter how much they may practice.
