Former Agency CEO Sentenced To Prison For Making False Statements in Jang Ja-yeon Case

On August 20th, the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Appeal Division 4-1 convicted Kim, the former CEO of the agency representing the late Jang Ja-yeon, of perjury for giving false testimony during the trial of lawmaker Lee Jong-gul in November 2012. As a result, he was sentenced to one year and six months in prison and was arrested in court.

In the initial trial, the court charged Kim with making a false statement by denying any knowledge of former CEO Bang, although he admitted that his statement of not assaulting the agency’s celebrities was not false. Consequently, he received a four-month prison sentence and one year of probation. However, the second trial ultimately found him guilty of all accusations.

The court noted that the defendant was in charge of the agency that represented the late Jang Ja-yeon. Despite having the most knowledge of the organization’s internal issues, the defendant chose to shirk responsibility and downplay the severity of the case. Additionally, the defendant fled to Japan during this time, raising doubts about their remorse or sense of guilt towards the deceased.

In March 2009, Jang Ja-yeon tragically passed away. The contents of her suicide note were deeply disturbing, as she revealed the horrific details of how she was coerced into engaging in sexual acts with powerful individuals in the broadcasting and business sectors. Despite her family’s efforts to seek justice by filing lawsuits against those on the infamous ‘Jang Ja-yeon’s list’, only her former agency CEO and manager faced prosecution.
