A former contestant from “Girls Planet 999″disclosed that they were not forced by Mnet to go on a strict diet during the show.
On June 7, 2024, Graze Grace interviewed Tammy Wu, a former contestant on the survival show “Girls Planet 999.”Tammy Wu was a member of the C-Group (Chinese) trainees and competed with the goal of debuting in the group Kep1er. During the interview, she shared her experience on the show.
During the interview, the conversation shifted to the topic of diet. In the K-pop industry, it is well-known that female idols are expected to maintain a slim and petite figure, often being subjected to strict dietary restrictions. Keeping this in mind, Grazy Grace inquired if the girls on the show were also subjected to similar practices.
According to Tammy, other survival shows have implemented this practice. However, “Girls Planet 999″contestants were not subjected to any specific diet.
She is correct. In the first season of “Produce 101,”there was a specific part of the show where selected participants were put on a dietary plan to shed pounds. This portion was not repeated in subsequent seasons of “Produce”or any other Mnet reality competitions.
Despite the intense stress of survival shows, Tammy revealed that she gained weight during the filming of the show. Like many other girls, she found herself eating more as a coping mechanism. In fact, she admitted to indulging in food due to her high levels of stress. As a result, she ended up gaining four to five kilograms (8.8-11 lbs) during the production of the show.
Despite not being asked to, certain staff members encouraged contestants to consume less food. However, their intentions were not to promote an unhealthy level of thinness in the girls.
Instead, they were advised to eat less in order to ensure their stage costumes fit properly. However, as they continued to gain weight, they would need to alter their costumes. Despite being advised, they were never pressured to lose weight.
According to Tammy, she and her colleagues were often approached and asked, “Could you all possibly eat a bit less? We’ve already measured you for your costumes and it would save us from having to make adjustments.”However, she clarified that they were never forced to go on diets.
As a contestant on “Girls Planet 999,”Tammy Wu, a Chinese-American, participated as an independent trainee. Unfortunately, she was eliminated in episode eight with a rank of C-17. Currently, Tammy is a student at New York University (NYU) pursuing a degree in music.
