Former Kpop Idol Comparable to BTS Reveals: “I Sacrificed Everything to Live in a Small Studio”

Lee Sang Won, a former member of the pioneering idol group “Sobangcha,” also recognized as “Firetruck” and once as celebrated as BTS, has opened up about his challenging life journey.

In a recent appearance on the YouTube channel “Update Olympics,” he addressed fans’ curiosity regarding his life and current circumstances.

During the session, Lee reflected on the immense popularity of Sobangcha, which once created a sensation in the music industry.

The group made its debut in 1987 with the album “Last Night’s Story,” quickly gaining attention for their bold fashion choices and vibrant performances that were unique for their time.

Lee Sang Won recalled how, at the height of their success, throngs of devoted fans gathered around the apartment where he lived with his fellow Sobangcha members.

The level of admiration they received is comparable to that of today’s globally recognized third-generation boy group, BTS.

Despite the glory years, Lee surprised many by sharing the hardships he faced afterward.

“During the preparations for an album, unfortunate events occurred, including a failed investment, leading to demands for repayment,” he explained.

Ultimately, amidst the turmoil, Lee Sang Won found himself working tirelessly, day and night, just to make ends meet.

He shared, “For over a decade, I faced constant pressure and threats regarding the album, making it exceedingly difficult to navigate my work life. As the stress mounted, I struggled to maintain a normal daily existence.”

After enduring years of stress, Lee ultimately declared bankruptcy, relinquishing everything and relocating to a small studio apartment.

He described his new living conditions as “quite shabby,” sharing a memorable visit from former bandmate Won Gwan and his wife, who brought green onion kimchi. He prepared ramen for them as a meal.

Fortunately, Lee revealed that life has improved for him now.

He spent three years working at a lounge bar owned by his younger brother, eventually saving enough capital to establish his own business.

When questioned about his current income, Lee disclosed, “Monthly revenue ranges between 60 to 70 million won, and during peak times, it can go up to 80 to 90 million won. However, the actual net profit isn’t that significant.”

Maintaining a cheerful demeanor throughout the discussion, Lee candidly admitted, “Though I seem to smile on the outside, inside, I’m quite damaged. But I’m managing to keep going.”

In conclusion, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sobangcha’s fans for their unwavering support throughout the years.

“I am truly thankful for the love I have received. I am living life to its fullest now, and my dream is to build a loving family. Currently single, I hope to create a happy home someday,” he shared.
