Classic Disney characters are set to make their debut in Fortnite, but this inclusion may not unfold as fans might anticipate. Don’t expect to see princesses navigating the battlefield equipped with sniper rifles.
In February 2024, Disney made headlines by investing $1.5 billion into Epic Games, aiming to develop a “persistent universe”that merges its beloved franchises with Fortnite’s growing metaverse.
Fortnite has already welcomed characters such as Darth Vader and The Incredibles, as well as an entire season dedicated to the Marvel universe. However, classic figures from Disney, including Mickey Mouse, Pinocchio, and Snow White, have seemingly stayed clear of Fortnite’s chaotic battlegrounds.
That scenario may soon shift. In a recent chat with The Verge, Saxs Persson, Executive Vice President of Epic Games, shared intriguing insights regarding the future of this partnership.
Persson indicated that additional Disney characters are on their way to join Fortnite’s universe; however, not every character will be suited for the frenetic action of battle royale.
He noted that Disney and Epic are committed to maintaining the essence of each brand. “Not all characters will fit into every scenario,” he remarked. “For instance, a LEGO minifigure doesn’t wield a firearm. Brands should retain the ability to enforce their guidelines with respect to associations with particular ratings.”
This implies that while you may see heroes from Star Wars and Marvel engaging in battles with lightsabers or guns, don’t hold your breath for Mickey to enter the conflict anytime soon. Nevertheless, the prospect of Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and even beloved princesses like Rapunzel and Snow White appearing in Fortnite is quite promising.
Persson highlighted the opportunity for players to navigate Disney’s universe through various entry points—whether through a “Disney front door” or a “Fortnite front door,” ensuring a fluid experience across the platforms.
This kind of integration represents Fortnite’s ongoing evolution from a straightforward battle royale and into something much broader—a comprehensive metaverse.
Over the past two years, Fortnite has introduced LEGO-themed survival modes, hosted music festivals, and rolled out high-energy racing tracks. The challenge ahead lies in balancing the desires of its long-time players, who appreciate the traditional gunplay, with newer participants who may prefer to hang out with characters like Klombo or enjoy a musical experience alongside artists like Karol G.
