A bug in Fortnite amplifies the already overpowered Captain America’s Shield in Chapter 5 Season 4.
On the first day of Fortnite’s Chapter 5 Season 4, players were quick to notice the overpowered nature of Captain America’s Shield. The community immediately called for nerfs, citing its ability to easily eliminate enemies and gain an unfair advantage in the final circle.
Despite Epic’s efforts to balance gameplay in the Battle Royale by implementing changes to certain weapons and items, the shield continues to experience issues with inconsistency and bugs.
A user on a Reddit thread noted that even if you are not equipped with Captain America’s Shield in the game, dying while using it will permanently grant you the shield bash ability.

Despite only having a pistol, SMG, and shield potion, the character in the shared clip continued to bump into objects as if they were equipped with Captain America’s Shield.
According to their explanation, the bug will consistently occur if you die while utilizing Captain America’s shield and subsequently get rebooted. This particular bug has been present in the game on Series X since the beginning of the season.
Despite the bash being a useful tool for pushing back enemies, its lack of control can also lead to a frustrating experience, particularly in a meta focused on mobility. This issue has been brought up by other players in the comments, with many offering suggestions on how to address it.
According to a user, holding the shield and then dropping it can result in this bug occurring. They also added that it is extremely frustrating.
Another user recommended, “You need to locate a shield, carry it while running, and then release it. After that, you can resume running as usual.”
On the other hand, another user shared, “I tried it out but ended up switching to the jetpack. Every time I ran, it would act as if I was using it on objects, leading to my death from other bugs associated with it.”
Until this issue is resolved in the Battle Royale, players will need to remain patient. In the meantime, consider checking out the list of all the unvaulted weapons available this season as potential alternatives.
