Fourth-Gen Female Idol’s Dance Challenge With Japanese AV Actress Sparks Backlash From K-Netz

A fourth generation idol collaborated with a Japanese AV actress to promote her comeback through a dance challenge. However, this led to backlash from Korean netizens towards the idol’s agency.

On June 20, 2024, Jeewon, a member of the girl group cignature, participated in the dance challenge for their newest single, “I like I like,”alongside Japanese AV actress Ogura Yuna. The video was shared on all of cignature’s official social media accounts. In the video, both women can be seen with big smiles as they dance.

Despite this, the actions of C9 Entertainment were met with criticism from Korean netizens, who strongly denounced the decision to have their idol perform with an AV actress.

A post titled “The company that had their idol participate in a challenge with an AV actress”was uploaded to TheQoo, one of South Korea’s most popular online community forums, on June 19, 2024.

Despite the backlash, C9 Entertainment stood by their decision, stating that their target audience had shifted towards a specific demographic of men. Many commenters criticized the company, calling their decision crazy and questioning their thought process.

The decision made by C9 Entertainment was so surprising that even Japanese netizens were taken aback.

Several comments stated,

  • “Wow, they have officially lost it.”
  • “Ah, seriously… This is too much…”
  • “This is a mess.”
  • “It’s quite obvious who their target audience is.”
  • “That one…”
  • “Wow… Even the Japanese people are shocked by the comments… Our reaction to this is normal.”
  • “Imagine uploading this to their female idol’s official accounts…”
  • “They must be crazy f*ckers…”
  • “Yikes.”
  • “Imagine filming with an AV actress… This company is crazy.”

Another incident between Jeewon and Ogura Yuna also sparked controversy. On June 20, the two made an appearance on the YouTube show “No Bbaku Tak Jae Hoon.”During the show, Ogura Yuna suggested that Jeewon should debut as an AV (porn) actress, complimenting her figure and predicting that she would become a popular AV actress.

Despite Ogura Yuna’s statements, Jeewon and the hosts made an effort to steer the conversation towards the cultural differences between Japan and Korea. In a graceful response, Jeewon mentioned her debut as a K-drama actor in her home country.

Despite receiving criticism for dressing Jeewon in revealing and form-fitting outfits that accentuate her figure and cleavage, C9 Entertainment has not addressed the issue of over-sexualization of female idols in the media. Many are accusing the company of exploiting the cignature member, but no statement has been issued by C9 Entertainment in response to the backlash.
