By embodying one of the most legendary horror antagonists in cinematic history, Robert Englund has firmly established himself as a figure synonymous with fear and nightmares. However, whether fans are ready or not, he is preparing to part ways with his role as Freddy Krueger.
At the age of 77, Englund has disclosed [via Bloody Disgusting] that he now considers himself “too old” to take on the role of the dream invader in any upcoming films. When probed about the possibility of one last performance as Freddy, he responded, “I don’t. I literally don’t.
“Sure, we could explore some creative ways, like a close-up or something similar, but the reality is, I can’t portray him any longer. I’m too old. There’s no Freddy left in me.”
Nonetheless, that doesn’t signify Englund’s complete farewell to the character. In fact, he is open to the idea of voicing a version of the infamous slasher villain that doesn’t require physical exertion. Specifically, he’s interested in an animated adaptation.
Englund first appeared as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street back in 1984. Over the past four decades, he has reprised this iconic role seven times in various horror films, along with the TV series Freddy’s Nightmares. The character was portrayed by Jackie Earle Haley in the 2010 reboot.
It’s clear that even the most ardent supporters of Elm Street believe that Englund has rightfully earned his retirement from this beloved character.
“He deserves his rest, if you ask me,” commented one X user, while another agreed: “Honestly… he’s 77 years old. Anyone expecting him to perform like he did in the 80s needs to reassess their expectations.”
“I’m happy he prioritizes his health, but it’s great to see he still has a passion for the character enough to consider voice work,” contributed a third user.
