Here’s how to access the Rex Heuermann documentary and get an in-depth look into this harrowing true crime story.

The Gilgo Beach serial killings constitute a disturbing series of at least eleven murders, predominantly involving young women and sex workers, that have roots dating back to the 1990s. The investigation gained significant momentum following the 2010 disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, leading to the grim discovery of remains across Suffolk County in New York.

For years, the identity of the Long Island serial killer remained shrouded in mystery. However, the landscape shifted dramatically with the formation of a specialized task force, which culminated in the arrest of Manhattan architect Rex Heuermann in 2023.

Most recently, on December 17, authorities announced that Heuermann had been charged with a seventh murder: Valerie Mack. With a slew of compelling true crime content becoming available this month, those intrigued by the Gilgo Beach case will find a free documentary available for viewing now.

This documentary, released at the beginning of 2024, meticulously chronicles the extensive search for the Long Island serial killer, delving into Heuermann’s arrest and the evidence that played a crucial role in linking him to the crimes.

Additionally, CBS’ 48 Hours has produced its own documentary on the case, titled The Gilgo Beach Serial Killings, which is also streaming for free on YouTube:

Both documentaries are essential for anyone looking to grasp the timeline of the investigation and the mounting evidence that led law enforcement to Heuermann. Given that the legal proceedings are ongoing, it is reasonable to anticipate more true crime productions on this subject in the future. Presently, Heuermann remains incarcerated, having pleaded not guilty to all charges leveled against him.

Heuermann faces accusations of murdering seven women, which include Valerie Mack and the victims commonly referred to as the Gilgo Four: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes, as well as Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. The judge overseeing the proceedings is reportedly aiming to schedule the trial for the upcoming year, although a specific date has yet to be announced.

What’s Happening with the Netflix Documentary?

In August 2023, Netflix confirmed a new documentary series focusing on the Gilgo Beach serial killings, to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Liz Garbus. However, details surrounding this project have been scarce since the announcement.

Subsequent discoveries of remains arose following Shannan Gilbert’s disappearance.

Despite the lack of recent updates, there is assurance that the project is still in progress. Documentaries of this nature often take considerable time to develop, particularly when they are aligned with ongoing investigations. Given that Heuermann’s trial is pending, it is likely the production team wishes to wait for a verdict before debuting this untitled docu-series.

Presently, it remains on Netflix’s schedule for upcoming original programming, but a release date has not been established yet.

This is not Garbus’s first involvement with the Gilgo Beach case; she previously directed the 2020 Netflix film Lost Girls, which focuses on the search for Shannan Gilbert and the subsequent discovery of the other victims. Garbus is renowned for her numerous award-winning documentaries such as The Farm: Angola, USA, What Happened, Miss Simone?, and Bobby Fischer Against the World.

Garbus’s three-part Netflix documentary is poised to explore the decades-long journey to bring justice to the victims’ families and capture the real-time developments surrounding Heuermann’s arrest.

Reflecting on the project, Garbus noted in 2023, “With the arrest of suspect Rex Heuermann on July 13 of this year, a new chapter began in the decades-old investigation of the missing and murdered women found in Gilgo Beach and beyond. And yet, just as some questions begin to find resolution, new inquiries arise.

“I am deeply invested in this narrative and am thankful to Netflix for enabling the continuation of my work in commemorating Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Shannan Gilbert, whose disappearance was pivotal in revealing the victims of Gilgo Beach, as well as other potentially related cases.”
