From Rural Peasant to Legendary Swordsman: New Anime to Join Spring 2025 Lineup

The main focus of the 30-second promotional video for the From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman anime was introducing the protagonist, Beryl Gardinant. The video also highlighted the show’s medieval setting and clearly showcased the use of magic, hinting at a fantasy aspect to the series.

Akio Kazumi is helming the anime at both Passione and Hayabusa Film studios, while Kunihiko Okada is overseeing the series scripts. The character designs are being created by Satsuki Hayasaka, who is also the chief animation director. Additionally, the music for the series will be composed by Yasuharu Takanashi. The premiere of the anime is scheduled for April 2025 on the IMAnimation programming block of 24 TV Asahi affiliate stations, as well as on BS Asahi.

Both of these illustrations feature protagonist Beryl Gardinant as the main focus. One is created by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima, the illustrator of the light novel series. In Nabeshima’s illustration, Beryl is depicted in a defensive stance with his sword, surrounded by text. The other illustration is by Kazuki Sato, the manga adaptation’s illustrator. This version shows Beryl gazing into the distance, his sword resting on his shoulder, with accompanying text.

Similar to other recent anime series, the From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman anime originated as a web novel on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website by Shigeru Sagazaki. In April 2021, Square Enix released the first light novel adaptation, with the eighth volume becoming available in Japan on August 6. A manga version also debuted in Akita Shoten’s Dokodemo Young Champion magazine in August 2021. J-Novel Club holds the license for the light novels while Yen Press holds the license for the manga.

The story follows Beryl, a former sword instructor in a small village, who had once dreamed of becoming a renowned master swordsman. His wish unexpectedly comes true when a former student, who is now a member of the Liberion Order, requests his services as a special instructor. Beryl journeys to the capital and is reunited with some of his former students, who still seek his guidance despite their success. This leaves him questioning the reason behind their desire for his teachings.
