From Ordinary Student to Celebrity: The Rise of a Handsome Star

Actor Yoo Ah-in, who burst onto the scene in 2004 with the drama “Sharp,”received the prestigious Grand Prize (Daesang) for Film Actor of the Year at the Asia Artist Awards on January 2, 2021.

In his recent work, Yoo captivated audiences with his powerful presence while portraying Jeong Jin-soo, the leader of a cult known as the New Truth Society, in Netflix’s acclaimed series “Hellbound.”

Born in 1986 in Daegu, Yoo Ah-in was spotted by a casting director while he was walking in front of his school during his studies in fine arts at Gyeongbuk Arts High School.

Determined to pursue a career in entertainment, Yoo Ah-in defied his parents’ wishes and moved to Seoul. Initially, he underwent training in singing and dancing with hopes of debuting as a solo idol, but ultimately left that path due to a perceived lack of talent. He later shifted his focus to acting and auditioned for “Sharp”(2004).

Though Yoo originally appeared as a minor character in “Sharp,”his popularity quickly surged, leading to a more prominent role. Following a break of over a year, he returned to his hometown, Daegu, before making his comeback in the independent film “Boys of Tomorrow”(2007).

Despite achieving early success and a stellar career, Yoo Ah-in faced significant challenges. On October 18, the Seoul Supreme Court extended his detention by two months following a sentence for drug-related offenses issued on September 3, which included one year in prison, fines, and mandatory participation in an 80-hour drug rehabilitation program. Though Yoo has filed an appeal, current laws allow for a maximum two-month detention period before a final ruling.
