In Frostpunk 2, Squalor serves as a vital indicator that exacerbates the Disease and Tension status effects among your populace. An elevated level of Squalor increases the chances of citizens falling ill or Districts experiencing malfunctions.

To develop a thriving city, it’s essential to keep Squalor at a minimal level or ideally absent. The primary contributors to increasing Squalor include the establishment of generator facilities and industrial buildings such as:

  • Chemical Hothouses
  • Actuated Heat Dispatcher
  • Mechanical Factory
  • Deep Melting Drill

While numerous technological upgrades can expedite production, they often lead to a rise in Squalor due to your citizens facing polluted air and excessive dirt.

Squalor will also escalate when you lack sufficient Materials, which contributes to a gradual increase in Squalor levels.

Effective Approaches to Reduce Squalor

Below are two essential buildings in Frostpunk 2 you should prioritize to effectively reduce Squalor.

1. Moss-Filtration Tower

The Moss-Filtration Tower can be located in the ‘Resources’ section of the Idea Tree, available as one of the two options in the ‘Filtration Towers’ tree, the other being the ‘Ventilation Towers’.

After researching the Moss-Filtration Tower, you must position it within the ‘Housing Districts’. Note that you’ll need to expand a Housing District at least once to create a Building Slot. This can be achieved by clicking on a Housing District and selecting the last option, which costs 50 Heatstamps and 50 Prefabs.

The Moss-Filtration Tower activates the ‘Rapid Filtration’ District Ability, which greatly lowers Squalor levels. It’s vital to have at least 400 Workforce for this building to operate.

The construction requirements for the Moss-Filtration Tower are:

  • 400 Workforce
  • 100 Heatstamps
  • 50 Prefabs

2. Waste Repurposing Facility

The Waste Repurposing Facility presents another effective solution for controlling or entirely eliminating Squalor. You can find it in the ‘Resources’ section of the Idea Tree under the ‘Waste Management Facilities’ option.

The construction requirements for the Waste Repurposing Facility include:

  • 400 Workforce
  • 200 Heatstamps
  • 100 Prefabs
  • 1 Core

The Waste Repurposing Facility can be constructed within the Industrial District. Be sure to first expand an Industrial District to support a building slot.

We continue to explore the game to uncover more strategies for managing, reducing, and eliminating Squalor. For now, these two methods are top recommendations for achieving this goal.
