G2 Caps Discusses Reasons for Not Joining LPL or LCK Esports Leagues

G2 star mid laner Caps has contemplated exploring opportunities in the LPL or LCK to further his career as a League of Legends player, but he has ultimately chosen to remain in Europe. If he aims to win the prestigious Worlds title, he’s determined to do it within his own region.

There’s no doubt that Caps still has ambitions to secure the most coveted trophy in League of Legends esports. The Worlds championship has eluded Western teams since its inception, with South Korean and Chinese teams typically dominating the global competition. While some teams have come close, none have approached the level of success that G2 has achieved.

In two separate conversations with Caps this year regarding this topic, he provided insights into why he considered a move to the LCK or LPL, but he remains dedicated to Europe until he can bring success and prestige to his home region.

“In the past, I’ve thought about, ‘Oh, it’d be fun to play in the LPL or LCK.’ From my perspective, it seems like they really invest a lot of effort. That’s the kind of commitment I’ve always wanted—a team that’s fully dedicated. I see that level of dedication in LPL and LCK teams, but I believe what we’ve been building over the last year and a half is excellent. I’m incredibly proud of everyone for their hard work,” Caps explained to me during MSI 2024.

Following up, I inquired about this topic again as we approach Worlds 2024, curious if he would seriously consider a shift.

“I haven’t had many off-seasons. It’s not something I’ve given a lot of thought to. However, playing against LPL and LCK players regularly would definitely be enjoyable. It might also present an easier pathway to winning Worlds, in a way. But it could also feel like the simpler choice,” Caps mentioned.

He elaborated further, “Of course, it would still be incredibly challenging to join a strong team and compete in that environment, but winning Worlds would arguably be simpler than doing so with a European squad. It would also feel somewhat wrong to represent a different region.”

While he acknowledged that he gains more experience battling against LCK and LPL mid laners compared to domestic competition, Caps remains resolute in his ambition to clinch the Worlds 2024 title. This mid laner has dominated the European scene for years, and he is determined to maintain that status as long as he continues to compete.
