As stated by the Nam’an District Police Department in Chongqing, China, 21-year-old Liu (also known as Fat Cat) from Linwu, Hunan tragically took his own life by jumping into the Yangtze River on the morning of April 11. The news of his death has caused immense sadness among netizens.
At the time, Fat Cat’s sister alleged that her brother had been sending all of his money to his girlfriend named “Zhu”, whom she believed to be a gold-digger. She even claimed that Fat Cat was willing to starve himself in order to save money for her.
Nevertheless, on May 3, Zhu (27, from Shizhu, Chongqing) made a report to the police regarding Liu’s sister (28, from Hunan), claiming that she had infringed upon Zhu’s privacy. Then, on May 5, Liu’s sister filed a separate complaint against Zhu, accusing him of deceiving her brother.
Following a thorough investigation in accordance with legal protocols, the authorities have released the following comprehensive information regarding the case.
1. Relationship Between Fat Cat and Zhu
By conducting interviews with relatives and acquaintances of both Zhu and Fat Cat, as well as gathering evidence, it was verified that their relationship was indeed as previously described.
In November 2021, Fat Cat and Zhu first connected while playing online games. By December 24 of the same year, they had officially become a couple. In March 2022, the pair traveled to Hunan, China, accompanied by Fat Cat’s sister and her boyfriend.
In February 2023, after going through a breakup and reconciliation, Zhu decided that a long-distance relationship was not feasible and extended an invitation for Fat Cat to move in with them in Chongqing. By October of that same year, Fat Cat had relocated to Chongqing and secured an apartment near Zhu’s residence. Since then, the two have been able to go on frequent dates.
In November 2023, Zhu made a public announcement on WeChat about their relationship and shared their plans to open a flower shop together. The couple decided that Fat Cat would invest 70,000 RMB (approximately 9,800 USD) while Zhu would take on the role of manager. The flower shop officially opened in December of the same year.
On February 7, 2024, Zhu presented Fat Cat to her parents, relatives, and friends as her romantic partner. Throughout their time together, they experienced several breakups and reconciliations.
On April 3 and 4, 2024, they once again had a disagreement and discussed the possibility of ending their relationship. The following day, Zhu reached out to Fat Cat through a WeChat message, suggesting that they both take some time to reflect and focus on their personal lives.
On April 10, Fat Cat informed Zhu that they will be transferring money to Zhu through Alipay. Zhu responded by questioning the reason for the transfer and advising Fat Cat to use the money for themselves, as playing games for money is not a sustainable option. Zhu also encouraged Fat Cat to save and plan for their own future instead of sending money to Zhu.
On that particular evening, Fat Cat used Alipay to transfer 66,666.66 RMB (equivalent to about 9,400 USD) to Zhu as a voluntary gift. He also sent a message through WeChat, expressing his desire for Zhu to continue operating the flower shop without his assistance. Finally, Fat Cat proceeded to block Zhu on Alipay.
On April 11, in the early morning hours, Fat Cat messaged Zhu on WeChat, declaring “We are done,”before taking the plunge into the Yangtze River. The police later retrieved a male body from the river on April 23.
On May 3, the necessary formalities were completed by Fat Cat’s relatives with the police before proceeding with the cremation.
Financial Transactions Between Fat Cat and Zhu
Upon examination of the transaction records between Fat Cat and Zhu, it was discovered that from November 2021, when they first connected online, until April 11, 2024, when Fat Cat tragically took his own life, he made a total of 317 money transfers to Zhu, amounting to over 799,000 RMB (equivalent to approximately 112,000 USD).
During this time, Zhu made a total of 179 money transfers to both Fat Cat and his family, amounting to over 463,000 RMB (approximately 65,000 USD). This consisted of 297,000 RMB (around 41,000 USD) sent to Fat Cat, 30,000 RMB (approx. 4,200 USD) to Fat Cat’s sister, and 136,000 RMB (about 19,100 USD) to Fat Cat’s father. This amount also included the initial 70,000 RMB invested in the flower shop and the 66,666.66 RMB transferred prior to Fat Cat’s suicide.
During their relationship, Fat Cat and Zhu opened a joint savings account on Alipay, which allowed them to both deposit and withdraw money at any time. From January 5, 2022 to April 8, 2024, Zhu made deposits totaling 236,000 RMB (equivalent to about 33,200 USD) and withdrew 165,000 RMB (equivalent to about 23,000 USD) for the expenses of their flower shop, shared living expenses, and Zhu’s personal use. Fat Cat also made deposits, totaling 173,000 RMB (equivalent to about 24,000 USD) and withdrew 248,000 RMB (equivalent to about 34,900 USD).
In addition, there was another shared bank account between them. Fat Cat took out an extra 75,000 RMB (equivalent to approximately 10,500 USD) from this account, which included Zhu’s deposit of 71,000 RMB (around 10,000 USD) and 4,000 RMB (approximately 500 USD) in interest.
The investigation revealed that Zhu and Fat Cat had been in a public relationship for more than two years. They introduced each other to their families and friends and were open about their romantic partnership. They had also made future plans together. It was found that Zhu did not engage in any fraudulent behavior, such as lying or hiding information, to obtain money from Fat Cat.
On May 11, the authorities chose not to pursue legal action in the case and informed Fat Cat’s sister of their decision. They also made her aware of her rights under the law. The sister has since expressed her agreement with this decision. Through mediation, Fat Cat’s parents and Zhu came to an agreement, and Zhu returned the remaining balance from their relationship to Fat Cat’s family.
After Fat Cat’s death by suicide, his sister searched through the mobile phone he left behind and proceeded to share private information and chat logs between her brother and Zhu on social media. This resulted in the spreading of misinformation and accusations against Zhu.
Ultimately, Zhu was the victim of public prosecution and was accused of being a gold-digger and a lesbian after it was revealed that she was the girlfriend of a gamer who had committed suicide.
