Gamers Nexus is taking legal action against Honey, initiating a class-action lawsuit aimed at challenging the app’s practices, which they allege have defrauded creators, consumers, and vendors alike.
The controversy intensified when Gamers Nexus’ Steve Burke publicly criticized Linus Tech Tips (LTT) during a recent video segment. Burke directly addressed Linus’ reactions to accusations raised by MegaLag, the individual who first exposed the alleged misconduct associated with Honey. MegaLag accused Linus of being aware of the issues but failing to address them transparently. In response, Linus argued that other creators had covered the issue and claimed ignorance regarding how it impacted consumers as asserted by MegaLag and his followers.
Burke’s Critique of Linus Tech Tips
In his video outlining the lawsuit against Honey, Burke highlighted Linus’s comments, pointing out that they contradicted Gamers Nexus’ mission. The segment featured a clip where Linus remarked on the potential backlash he would face if he opted to create content on Honey, joking that he might be “hanging from the nearest tree.”Burke seized this moment, stating, “Well, that’s the video we’re making right now.”
Burke emphasized the importance of addressing these concerns, regardless of potential risks, asserting that it was disrespectful to small creators adversely affected by Honey’s actions. He further stated, “It’s just unbelievably disrespectful to all the solo people and small companies who are suffering.” Burke expressed a fundamental disagreement with Linus’s perspective, asserting that such views were detrimental to both consumers and emerging reviewers while reinforcing that Gamers Nexus remembers its origins and advocates for fairness.
This isn’t the first occasion Gamers Nexus has publicly critiqued Linus Tech Tips. A previous investigative video by Burke helped instigate substantial internal changes at Linus Media Group. Linus has acknowledged that many modifications stemmed from his own decision to step down as CEO in May 2023, aiming to enhance operations and workplace conditions within his company.
Despite halting production briefly following Gamers Nexus’s expose, Linus has indicated that many initiatives for improvement were already in progress before the criticism surfaced.
To provide further context to the controversy, Burke noted that the clip utilized in Gamers Nexus’ analysis did not encompass the entirety of Linus’s comments on the matter.
Linus Tech Tips Responds
In the January 3, 2025, episode of the WAN show, Linus himself addressed the video, acknowledging his shortcomings in handling the topic previously. He remarked, “I did a terrible job of handling this segment last week,”while elaborating on the situation.
Linus reiterated his suspicions regarding Honey’s manipulation of affiliate links but expressed he was unaware of the full extent of its impact on consumers. He also recognized that crafting a video back then could have provided valuable insights for other creators, but he explained the reasons for his initial reluctance.
Reflecting on the past, Linus said, “In hindsight, it is possible that, if we had made a video three years ago, it could have saved creators some money.”He acknowledged that many creators had already distanced themselves from Honey by that time, raising concerns about the necessity and potential repercussions of his video.
His co-host Luke added that discussions with fellow creators had led them to withdraw from working with Honey based on the evolving situation. Linus mused about the hypothetical fallout from making a provocative statement against Honey if they had pursued that course of action at the time.
The resulting conversation has sparked a division among Linus’s audience, highlighting the differences between addressing issues in real-time versus post-analysis—evident between the timelines of MegaLag’s expose and potential earlier interventions by Linus Tech Tips.
