YouTuber Gamers Nexus has initiated legal action against PayPal and its subsidiary Honey, marking the second occasion a creator has taken legal steps against the company amidst revelations of alleged deceptive practices. This lawsuit follows a previous exposé by fellow YouTuber MegaLag, who accused Honey of misconduct including theft from both consumers and content creators, arguing that the company’s operations represent a “scam.”
MegaLag’s investigation highlighted how Honey supposedly substituted creators’ unique affiliate codes with their own, while also collaborating with brands to manipulate which discount codes were visible to users. This report ignited significant outrage across social media platforms, prompting reactions from notable YouTube figures like Linus Tech Tips and LegalEagle, the latter of whom has also filed a lawsuit against Honey.
Details of Gamers Nexus’s Lawsuit
Gamers Nexus has now disclosed the formal filing against Honey and PayPal, citing three key grievances: conversion, tortious interference with contractual relations, and unfair and deceptive trade practices. According to Steve Burke from Gamers Nexus, “We filed this in conjunction with CPM Legal, a consumer class action firm, representing all those impacted by what we believe to be anti-consumer actions that undermine both reviewers and consumers.”
In a commendable effort to promote consumer rights, Burke mentioned their intention to donate a considerable portion of any potential settlement proceeds to organizations such as the Public Interest Research Group and Archive.org. He emphasized, “Legally, we may be restricted from disclosing specific settlement details in the future, but the amount we contribute will certainly exceed any potential payment that Gamers Nexus might receive from this settlement or court ruling.”
While Steve Burke clarified that this lawsuit operates independently from LegalEagle’s, he did indicate that there is a possibility the two class action suits could merge if escalated to a higher court.
As of now, there has been no comment from PayPal or Honey regarding the significant backlash prompted by the allegations brought forth by MegaLag, LegalEagle, or Gamers Nexus.
