Gege Akutami reveals motivation behind Jujutsu Kaisen’s only romance

Gege Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, has explained the absence of romances in his manga, except for the relationship between Mechamaru and Miwa.

Despite the bleak setting of Jujutsu Kaisen, there is little room for love. This results in a lack of romantic plotlines throughout the series. However, amidst the darkness, two students from Kyoto Jujutsu High have defied the odds and found love.

Despite their tragic love story, Mechamaru never had the chance to confess his feelings to Miwa before his untimely death during the Shibuya Incident. It was only after his passing that he finally expressed his love for her, but he was unaware that Miwa had harbored the same feelings for him. Sadly, he never had the opportunity to learn of her love for him.

Despite its bittersweet conclusion, theirs remains the sole canon love story between two characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. While there is another significant romance suggested in the plot – that of Toji Fushiguro and Megumi’s mother – it remains unseen.

At the Shibuya exhibition for the manga, an interviewer inquired about Gege Akutami’s decision to incorporate the romantic relationship between Mechamaru and Miwa.

According to the author, there are minimal romantic elements present in Jujutsu Kaisen. This is because the characters and plotlines do not warrant the inclusion of a romantic relationship. However, the only exception to this is Miwa, as she seemed to have potential for a love interest, leading to the decision to explore that development.

As Miwa is introduced as the most normal member of the group, it is understandable that she would not have much time to think about romance. With the constant threat of murderous curses and ancient sorcerers, there is already enough tragedy in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. Adding more romantic relationships would only lead to more potential heartbreak and loss.

Despite the romantic love story between Miwa and Mechamaru, there is also a twisted and tragic relationship between Yuta and Rika. However, it is not a true, genuine romantic love. As the story of Jujutsu Kaisen progresses, it seems that romance will not play a significant role in the future either.
