Gege Akutami: Setting Up Jujutsu Kaisen for an Attack on Titan Style Ending, with Sukuna’s Fingers as the Key

Just days ago, fans of anime and manga were taken aback when Gege Akutami, the mangaka behind Jujutsu Kaisen, announced that he would be concluding the series on September 30, 2024. This means that after the release of chapter 267 on August 26, 2024, the popular battle shonen will only have four more chapters until its finale.

One particular theory on a popular Jujutsu Kaisen subreddit stood out among the many outlandish theories circulating in the fandom regarding the series finale. The theory proposed that Akutami may be setting up his series for an ending similar to Attack on Titan, potentially involving Sukuna’s fingers.

Despite the fact that the conclusion of Attack on Titan elicited tears from the majority of the fandom, a particular aspect of its finale gained significant traction on social media.

As many fans may recall, Mikasa Ackerman laid Eren Yeager’s head to rest under a tree on their native Paradis Island, symbolically making it her own final resting spot as well.

The final scene depicted the tree continuing to thrive for potentially thousands of years in the future, long after decades or centuries had passed. In the concluding moments of the series, a young boy and his dog were shown entering the massive tree where Eren was laid to rest, following a war that seemingly devastated the rest of the world.

Hajime Isayama skillfully created a brilliant and subtle full-circle moment, as this scene closely mirrored the way in which the founder, Ymir, first obtained her Titan abilities.

According to the original timeline of the series, Ymir sought refuge under a massive tree nearly two thousand years ago as she was being pursued by the Eldians. It was during this time that she encountered the Hallucigenia, the entity that bestowed upon her the Power of the Titans and the ability to enter the Path.

The ending of Attack of Titan was undeniably intriguing, adding to the already thought-provoking and impactful nature of the series. Fans were left wondering if the boy who entered the tree where Eren was buried would become the next inheritor of the Titan Powers.

After considering the ending of Attack on Titan, a Reddit user by the name of u/Mikko– shared a compelling theory on the r/Jujutsufolk community, a popular social media platform.

Despite the fact that Sukuna’s fingers were described as indestructible cursed objects from the beginning, the user began their theory by stating that there was a common belief that the fingers were destroyed upon consumption.

Nevertheless, this idea was contradicted during the Shinjuku Showdown arc when the King of Curses was observed regurgitating his own fingers and then immediately consuming them. This was done in an effort to enhance his endurance after enduring severe harm to his soul from Yuji’s Soul Strikes.

According to the user’s theory, Sukuna’s fingers cannot be consumed directly. Instead, they act as an indestructible catalyst for his power and can only be utilized by having them in one’s system.

The user then proposed a scenario in which, following Sukuna’s death and burial, the fingers would still be inside his body until it fully decomposes. They would then likely remain buried alongside Sukuna’s remains due to their indestructible nature, possibly for a prolonged period until they are accidentally discovered once again.

It could be argued that a power ceases to exist when its source dies, and this could potentially apply to Sukuna and his fingers. However, the user pointed out that even though Sukuna was technically deceased for a thousand years, his fingers still possessed their supernatural abilities.

The user’s theory ultimately suggested an uncertain ending, in which Sukuna’s fingers would be laid to rest with him and eventually fade from the world’s memory in the near future.

Despite the fact that the fingers would not be completely destroyed, there remains a chance that they could be found by someone at some point in time. This could result in the King of Curses causing chaos in the world once again. It is worth mentioning that if Akutami chooses to take this direction for the finale of Jujutsu Kaisen, it would serve as a subtle yet powerful tribute to the ending of Attack on Titan.

Despite this, it would be irresponsible and illogical for the remaining Jujutsu sorcerers to leave Sukuna’s fingers buried in the ground without taking precautions to ensure they could never be found by humanity. As a result, it is improbable that this theory will come to fruition, as it implies that the danger of Sukuna would never truly be eliminated.
