‘Gen Z’s Controversial Reaction to the Latest Food Trend: Tomato Iced Toast’

Move over avocado on toast, iced tomato on toast is the latest trend taking over TikTok. However, not everyone is convinced by this new creation.

Granita, a classic Italian treat, is crafted by freezing a combination of fruit, sugar, and various flavorings before shaving them into distinct crystals. Among the top favored options are orange, lemon, mint, and almond.

Nevertheless, the younger generation of TikTok users, known as Gen Z, are reinventing the traditional dessert by using grated vegetables to make a frozen salad mixture.

A well-known video features chef Eitan Bernath grating an entire tomato onto a burrata ball.

Once he finishes shaving the tomato, he adds a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, as well as a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Finally, he tops it off with a sprig of basil.

Several individuals have also joined in on the trend by creating their own versions, opting to shave the frozen tomatoes over bread instead of cheese.

After successfully recreating the viral dish, TikToker Madison exclaimed, “I love it!”

Despite its widespread appeal, some remain uncertain about the invention, with one even going so far as to declare it “DISGUSTING.”

A different person wrote, “I am unsure of my feelings towards this.”

One person inquired, “Is it permissible?”as another spectator exclaimed, “I’m shouting in Italian!”

The new trend quickly went viral on TikTok

Nevertheless, a few individuals were excited to test the new ‘trick’: “Fantastic method! I currently only freeze jalapeños and sprinkle them on all my dishes… I suppose I should also include tomatoes!”

One person claimed, “I gave this a try and it was amazing. I was initially hesitant, but now I can’t imagine eating it any other way. However, I am also too lazy to prepare it every time.”

Another person agreed, stating, “I gave this a try and it’s truly fantastic! The burrata adds a wonderful texture to the tomato.”

In 2024, this may not be the only viral food trend, as just last June people were experimenting with a strange combination of KitKat and Heinz ketchup to create a sweet and savory concoction.
