George Cooper Discusses Major Flaw in Young Sheldon Series Finale

Losing George Cooper in the finale of Young Sheldon was certainly a shock, but many fans were equally disheartened by Missy’s conclusion. Actor Lance Barber explains that there’s a purpose behind how the story unfolded.

As fans prepare for the upcoming spinoff Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, they’ll have to cope with the absence of one pivotal character: George Cooper. His tragic death at the conclusion of Young Sheldon Season 7 was anticipated, but does this signify the finale’s most significant error?

A recurring point of frustration for many viewers has been the persistent neglect of Missy (Raegan Revord). As the youngest of the Cooper siblings, she has never obtained the same spotlight as her intellectually gifted twin brother, Sheldon, leading her to rebel as she matures.

When the emotional funeral scene arrived, the situation remained unchanged – and it appears that the spinoff will delve into similar themes. Struggling to cope with the loss of her father, Missy finds herself without anyone truly available to lend an ear.

But is her perceived neglect for no reason? According to Lance Barber, Missy’s lack of support or resolution at the end of Season 7 is a deliberate choice that ultimately enhances her storyline’s depth.

“It was intentional that her journey unfolded this way, and it’s wonderful to see it continue for Raegan in Georgie & Mandy, expanding her character further. We’re aware of Missy’s backstory, and this development adds more significance, depth, and complexity to who she becomes and why,” Barber shared.

There is good news for frustrated Young Sheldon followers – Missy is set to return in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. She is confirmed to appear in Episode 2 and the anticipated Thanksgiving reunion, with her role expanded to a series regular since filming commenced in July.

It stands to reason that George’s legacy will also be preserved in the spinoff. His influence will undoubtedly play a crucial role in Georgie’s path to fatherhood, and if Missy is involved, she is likely to address her own emotional challenges as well.

“I recently took my family to observe a shoot for the upcoming Thanksgiving episode, and it was incredibly moving,” Barber added.

The Thanksgiving special – believed to be Episode 5 of the Georgie & Mandy spinoff – will reunite the entire Cooper family… except for one member.

While Missy may receive support from Mary, Meemaw, Dale, and the McAllisters, it remains uncertain if Sheldon will make a cameo appearance.

On the bright side, Sheldon’s experiences at Caltech might turn out to be beneficial for Missy, and for viewers alike. This could provide an opportunity for her character to shine as the Coopers finally recognize her true self.

You can catch up on the Young Sheldon finale on CBS or Paramount+ (although many might agree that once was more than enough). Seasons 1-6 of the captivating series are available on Netflix.

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage premieres on October 17.
