The highly anticipated first full-length trailer for The Witcher 4 has ignited excitement among fans by confirming that Ciri will be the central character of this new chapter in the franchise. Additionally, there are strong indications that Geralt of Rivia, the beloved protagonist from the previous three games, will also make a return.
During The Game Awards 2024, several significant announcements were made, including titles like Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and Elden Ring Nightreign. However, it was the unveiling of The Witcher 4 trailer that truly captivated audiences and sparked extensive discussions within the gaming community.
Since the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2015, the series has seen a lull in new content while CD Projekt Red shifted its focus to Cyberpunk 2077. This hiatus allowed fans to speculate extensively about the sequel. One of the most prominent theories has now been validated: Ciri will indeed take center stage in the upcoming game.
Hints of Geralt’s Return in the Trailer
As the trailer approached its conclusion, viewers were treated to Geralt’s voice echoing alongside the new game logo. His initial line could be interpreted as a nostalgic reminder of the series’ past, stating: “Time for a new saga.” Yet, it is the follow-up line, “See you on the path,” that strongly hints at his involvement in Ciri’s journey.
Interestingly, many versions of the trailer, including the one released by CD Projekt Red on social media platform X, have omitted Geralt’s voiceover. However, keen listeners can catch it in the official Game Awards broadcast, where it is clearly audible.
Moreover, Doug Cockle, the voice actor behind Geralt, previously hinted at the character’s inclusion in an interview with Fall Damage, stating that Geralt would be “part of the game,” although he clarified it would “not be about him this time.” After some initial backlash from the game developers, Cockle later suggested his comments were based on rumors, yet the trailer’s content appears to confirm Geralt’s return to the narrative.
As of now, CD Projekt Red has not announced an official release date for The Witcher 4. However, with news that full production is in progress and that a majority of the developer team is dedicated to this title, fans are optimistic that the wait will not be prolonged.
