On Monday, April 15, 2024, the German Football Club Borussia Dortmund’s official X account celebrated National Anime Day with a One Piece-themed jersey and corresponding post. The jersey showcases an illustration of Luffy on the back by series creator, author, and illustrator Eiichiro Oda, and also includes what appears to be an autograph in black marker on the center.
When looking at the player’s jersey, instead of their name, the number 23 is replaced with “One Piece.”The team name is still displayed at the bottom of the jersey. The post also playfully mentions National Anime Day and the team’s desire to watch all 1,100 episodes of the Toei Animation-produced television anime adaptation.
What makes this seemingly unofficial collaboration even more interesting is the fact that many players from the Borussia Dortmund team are not only general anime fans, but also fans of One Piece. Despite the unofficial nature of the jersey collaboration, as mentioned earlier, this could potentially pave the way for an official collaboration between the two franchises in the future.
Borussia Dortmund and One Piece Fans Anticipate Potential Crossover Merchandise Collaboration
Regrettably, there is currently no information about an official collaboration between One Piece and Borussia Dortmund. Similarly, it appears that the social media post by the German Football Club is merely a tribute to the highly successful manga and anime series, which holds the record for being the best-selling and longest-running of its kind.
Additionally, as previously mentioned, the evident fondness for anime in general and Oda’s series in particular among many of the club’s players may lead to a potential collaboration in the future. Furthermore, there appears to be a strong overlap between their respective fan followings, as demonstrated by the abundance of fanart featuring both franchises readily accessible on numerous websites.
Borussia Dortmund, founded in 1909 by eighteen football players, is located in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. Their men’s professional football team competes in the Bundesliga, which is considered the highest level of the German football league system. The club has an impressive record, having won eight league championships, five DFB-Pokal titles, one UEFA Champions League trophy, one Intercontinental Cup, and one UEFA Winners’ Cup.
Oda first began the One Piece manga series in July 1997 in the manga publication magazine Weekly Shonen Jump by Shueisha. The series has consistently been serialized in the magazine and is still running after almost 27 years. Despite this, Oda has stated that the story is currently in its Final Saga, indicating that the series may be coming to a close soon.
Toei Animation, as previously mentioned, is responsible for producing the weekly television anime adaptation of the series, which has been consistently airing since October 1999. Just earlier this month, the 1,100th episode of the series aired, continuing the ongoing Egghead Island arc. Recently, Netflix also created a live-action television series based on the manga, which initially faced skepticism from fans before its release. Despite not being flawless, the final product received positive reception from many fans.
