Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei has been confirmed as not the final installment in the Ghost franchise by the developers shortly after its announcement.
During Sony’s September State of Play presentation for PlayStation, numerous exciting reveals including Palworld for PS5, a new action-adventure Souls-like game titled Hell is Us, and a complimentary Astro Bot DLC highlighted the event.
However, the most significant announcement came at the end of the livestream, where a highly anticipated cinematic trailer for the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima was unveiled. This upcoming title, named Ghost of Yotei, will not follow the original protagonist.
A New York Times article featuring insights from the game’s creative directors, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, hinted at additional titles beyond Ghost of Yotei.
The interview emphasized that this “sequel” to Ghost of Tsushima represents both an expansion and the establishment of a new Sony franchise. Importantly, it was noted that this intellectual property would “include at least one movie and other spin-offs.”
The Ghost of Tsushima movie was initially announced in 2021, with Chad Stahelski attached as the director; however, Yotei is currently the only other game disclosed as part of the Ghost franchise.
Set 300 years after the events of the first game, Yotei will introduce a new female protagonist named Atsu. Players will explore Mount Yotei, a distinct region in Japan, during the Edo period.
As the article noted, the essence of a Ghost game is about “transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan.” With feudal Japan offering vast opportunities for unique narratives, it’s no surprise other spin-offs have been confirmed.
Despite the usual backlash following the reveal of Ghost of Yotei, this franchise seems poised for success. The expected release for this follow-up is set for 2025.
