On the 19th, (G)I-DLE showcased their latest track “Klaxon”on KBS’s “Music Bank.”The members donned tight sleeveless tops emblazoned with the word “LIFEGUARD”and paired them with short red shorts for their stage.
The group donned red bags, which were believed to contain emergency supplies, secured around their waists. They also included additional items such as whistles and hats for added emphasis.
The lifeguard notion, which appears to be embodied by the members, pertains to those who are in charge of preventing drowning and ensuring safety in the water at popular summer destinations.
Despite the outfits likely being meant to represent a summer beach theme in accordance with the new song’s concept, their excessively short length, revealing undergarments, and resemblance to a particular profession caused a stir due to concerns of sexual objectification and unauthorized use of the Red Cross symbol.
The Korean Red Cross, which launched a campaign in May to raise awareness about the unauthorized use of the Red Cross emblem, has officially prohibited the use of the mark on (G)I-DLE’s outfits without permission.
According to the provisions of the Korean Red Cross Act, the utilization of the Red Cross emblem without authorization may lead to a fine of up to 10 million KRW or a penalty of up to 5 million KRW. Despite the ongoing unauthorized use by certain hospitals and pharmacies, the Red Cross took measures to protect their emblem by applying for trademarks for three different categories: pharmaceuticals, medical devices (class 10), and hospitals and pharmacies (class 44). This was done in order to prevent any further unauthorized use.
Upon hearing the news, internet users were quick to criticize (G)I-DLE’s styling team. Comments included, “Who wears such revealing clothes while lifeguarding?”and “The outfits are too suggestive.”Others questioned the coordination and pointed out possible misuse of the Red Cross emblem. Some even suggested that a fine be paid for the inappropriate outfits.
According to MHN Sports, the Korean Red Cross confirmed that (G)I-DLE did not seek approval for the use of the Red Cross emblem. They also stated that the agency responsible for managing the emblem, the International Humanitarian Law Institute, will take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. However, since the misuse was unintentional, no fines or penalties will be imposed.
Despite the controversy, Cube Entertainment, the agency of (G)I-DLE, has yet to issue a statement.
