Soyeon of (G)I-DLE impressed fans with her powerful solo performance at the group’s concerts in Seoul. However, after her impactful lyrics gained widespread attention, Korean netizens began criticizing her co-member, Shuhua.
On August 6, 2024, a Nate Pann user shared a post titled “Jeon Soyeon appears to be throwing shade at other fourth-gen idols”on the popular South Korean online forum.

The author of the post shared a screenshot from a fan account dedicated to Soyeon. The screenshot displayed the lyrics of Soyeon’s solo performance at the group’s concerts in Seoul on August 3 and 4. In her lyrics, Soyeon criticizes idols who lack singing skills, referring to them as “tone-deaf clowns”and asserting that they do not belong in the industry. Her lyrics state,
“Little kids, move out of my lane,
If you want to dance, then go be a dancer, okay?
Tone-deaf clowns, you do not belong in this game,
If you’re a singer, grab the mic or back off,
If you’re a rapper, pen your bars, step up to play
Korean netizens who saw the post couldn’t help but mock Soyeon’s lyrics. They believed calling out other fourth-generation idols was hypocritical when her co-member, Shuhua, has repeatedly been called out for her live vocals.I don’t care, I’ll scream it out, I’m not scared,
Hey little puppy, act like a dog.”
Despite Soyeon’s lyrics, many Korean netizens still chose to mock her. They saw it as hypocritical to criticize other fourth-generation idols when her own co-member, Shuhua, has faced repeated criticism for her live vocals.
Despite her debut, Shuhua has constantly faced criticism for her vocal ability, with some accusing her of being tone-deaf and lacking talent compared to her fellow members. Additionally, there have been complaints about her pronunciation, with some noting that even though Yuqi and Minnie are foreigners, they still sound like native speakers in their performances.
Some argue that Soyeon was not in a position to speak, citing her group members’ inability to perform live. It has been noted that while Soyeon has taken on more singing roles in (G)I-DLE’s recent releases, her strength still lies in rapping, and her vocal skills may not meet the standards of other idols. There were also harsher criticisms towards Soyeon, with some stating that an idol’s appearance is an important aspect of their job and criticizing her looks.
Several remarks made by netizens from Korea state that,
- “There’s a tone-deaf member in her team. Is she punching the air every time she sings?”
- “There’s a tone-deaf singer in her own group, though.”
- “3 kills in 1 shot, including her own group LOL.”
- “But Soyeon’s can’t even sing HAHAHA!”
- “If Soyeon is an idol, then let’s take a jab about being pretty.”
