Challenges Facing Telecommunications Companies in Drama Production
Telecommunications companies have increasingly ventured into the realm of drama and variety shows, yet many of these productions are falling short of success. Despite featuring A-list celebrities, these programs often find themselves eclipsed by dominant over-the-top (OTT) platforms.
Go Hyun-jung’s “Namib”: A Disappointing Comeback
One recent example is Go Hyun-jung‘s much-anticipated return to the small screen in the drama “Namib.” After a three-year hiatus, expectations were high, but unfortunately, the show has not managed to surpass a meager 1% in viewer ratings. This is particularly disappointing given the significant buzz surrounding Go Hyun-jung herself.
A Cliched Premise and Limited Visibility
Produced by KT Studio Genie, “Namib” has garnered some praise for the performances of its cast, including Go Hyun-jung, but criticism has been directed at its clichéd storyline. The plot follows the journey of Kang Soo-hyun (played by Go Hyun-jung), a former star producer, who collaborates with Yoo Jin-woo (played by Ryeoun), a dismissed trainee, to discover and nurture a new talent.
However, the drama is exclusively available on KT Genie TV and the ENA channel, which are less popular in comparison to major OTT platforms. This limited exposure has hindered its ability to attract a wider audience. Although positive word-of-mouth has contributed to a slight increase in ratings, “Namib” still faces tough competition from both OTT and terrestrial dramas.
Telecommunications Companies Struggling to Make Their Mark
As companies like KT and LG U+ continue to produce dramas and variety shows, the challenges of visibility and audience engagement remain significant. KT Studio Genie, for example, has launched several dramas since the success of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” in 2022, yet none have achieved the same level of popularity.
LG U+ and the “Kian CEO”Debacle
Similarly, LG U+ encountered difficulties with its inaugural variety show, “Kian CEO,” featuring the popular entertainer Kian84. With a rating stuck in the dismal 0% range, the show chronicles Kian84’s comedic attempts to assist struggling CEOs. Unfortunately, despite hopes tied to Kian84’s popularity, viewership has remained low due to the show’s exclusive availability on LG U+ Mobile and the ENA channel, which are not considered mainstream viewing options.
In an effort to improve its reception, “Kian CEO” has recently expanded its reach by partnering with Netflix, hoping to tap into a larger audience base.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Telecommunications in Content Production
Telecommunications companies aim to set themselves apart by venturing into content production, aspiring to create unique offerings that go beyond traditional telecom services. However, in an increasingly OTT-centric landscape, their road to success remains fraught with challenges, and it remains to be seen how they will adapt and thrive in this competitive environment.
