The remarkable visual effects of Godzilla Minus One have received praise from nearly everyone, leaving some fans incredulous at the seemingly “unbelievable”amount spent on its production.
Minus One stands out as the most successful Godzilla film, impressing both long-time enthusiasts and newcomers with its thrilling action and poignant plot.
Even with various streaming options available, fans are still amazed by the award-winning VFX in Godzilla Minus One. However, some find it hard to believe that the movie was produced with a budget of only $15 million.
“A fan posted on X/Twitter that the budget for this movie was $15 million. It is truly impressive what VFX artists can accomplish when they are not burdened with unreasonable deadlines.”
A different individual also stated, “In my opinion, this was the greatest Godzilla film I’ve ever watched, and that’s saying something considering the others had a budget 10 times larger.”
“According to a third individual commenting, the director, who was an ex-VFX artist, not only had a clear artistic vision but also meticulously planned out each shot with the team despite the tight deadlines.”
In order to understand the budget of Minus One, it is helpful to compare it to similar MonsterVerse movies. For example, this year’s Godzilla X Kong had a budget of $135-150 million, while the 2014 standalone Godzilla movie had a budget of $160 million. Even the 2016 film Shin Godzilla had a larger budget of $78 million.
“Unbelievable. I was expecting it to be much higher. The skill some people possess in VFX,”commented a fourth fan on social media, while a fifth expressed their desire to prioritize artistic elements in films and to be patient with smaller budgets and longer deadlines in order to achieve success.
Despite winning an Academy Award for their work on Godzilla Minus One earlier this year, the VFX team faced criticism from fans for their working conditions. Many pointed out the long hours and low pay that Japanese artists in the industry have long been subjected to.
According to Takashi Yamazaki, it is crucial to create a suitable environment for work, as he emphasized in an interview with Vulture. He explained that they took steps to make the space more inviting and comfortable, such as investing in a kitchen and hiring a dedicated sushi chef. Although they try to avoid long work hours, Yamazaki reassured that if they do occur, the atmosphere is welcoming and pleasant for the team to spend extra time in.
“While it can be difficult during busy periods, such as crunch or postproduction, to complete our work, we make a conscious effort to avoid working late nights. Additionally, we have all of our weekends off. Hopefully, as VFX budget increases over time, we will have the opportunity to make even more improvements. I eagerly anticipate the day when we can provide better compensation for our creative team.”
There is currently no clarity on the plot of the next Godzilla movie, but with its recent success on streaming platforms, there is a strong possibility of a Minus One sequel.
