Netflix’s highly anticipated release, Godzilla Minus One, has not only become the number one movie in the US, but it has also broken a world-first streaming record.
Last year, Godzilla Minus One exceeded all expectations, receiving rave reviews and becoming one of the top-rated films of 2023. It also had a successful global box office, earning over $115 million. Due to its success, Toho extended its theatrical release and even released a black-and-white version. Additionally, the film made history as the first in the franchise to win an Oscar.
Despite its Academy Award victory several months ago, there has been a high demand among fans to watch it again. Unfortunately, as it is only available on Prime Video and Blu-ray in Japan, many resorted to finding alternative and unauthorized methods, leading to it being the most illegally downloaded movie globally.
Suddenly, on June 1, it appeared on Netflix and VOD platforms worldwide. And now, it has achieved a remarkable feat: being the first film ever to hold the top spot simultaneously on both Netflix and iTunes.

It is quite an impressive accomplishment, particularly when one considers the consequences. When a movie gains widespread popularity on Netflix, many people will simply choose to stream it. After all, why pay extra when a subscription is already being paid for?
Despite its availability on streaming platforms, fans’ love for Minus One is so strong that they are also purchasing digital copies. In other words, the demand for Godzilla is insatiable.
