Gojo’s Chant for Red in Jujutsu Kaisen May Hold a Clue to Sukuna’s Demise

The ongoing Jujutsu Kaisen manga has depicted the sorcerers’ year-long battle against Ryomen Sukuna, with the possibility of the main antagonist’s defeat occurring in chapter 264. A recent theory on Reddit proposes that Gojo’s chant for his Red attack may have been a subtle foreshadowing of the King of Curses’ ultimate demise.

Despite the fact that Jujutsu Kaisen fans are notorious for creating numerous theories, it can be argued that this particular one stands out due to its unconventional approach and the level of disbelief it demands. However, this only adds to the intrigue of the theory, as it allows for a deeper analysis of how Gojo’s chant may tie in with the current events in the manga, especially following Hana Kurusu’s reappearance.

This article includes spoilers for the series.

According to a theory on Reddit, the chant used by Satoru Gojo to perform his Red attack may have also been a subtle foreshadowing by author Gege Akutami of how Ryomen Sukuna will eventually be defeated in the manga. The initial phrase of the chant, “Phase,”describes the constant distance and overlap between Gojo and his Hollow Purple technique, as well as how Yuta Okkotsu was able to use his body against the King of Curses.

The term “Paramita”in Buddhism refers to “perfection”and is the next part of the chant. It symbolizes a person achieving a deep connection with their core values. This can be seen as a metaphor for Yuji Itadori’s nine consecutive Black Flash attacks, which showcase his perfect fighting abilities. He is renowned for his unwavering dedication to his core values, going to great lengths to uphold them.

The last section of the chant, “Three Pillars of Light,”may allude to the manga’s depiction of the Jacob’s Ladder technique, where Sukuna was struck three times by its light. Hana Kurusu, the wielder of this technique, caused the first and third strikes, while the second one was delivered by Yuta Okkotsu in their earlier battle. This suggests that Sukuna, currently confined in Yuji’s Domain Expansion, is on the verge of defeat.

The problems with this theory

Despite Gege Akutami’s skill in foreshadowing various plot points and moments throughout the years in the manga, this particular Jujutsu Kaisen theory falls short due to its far-fetched nature. The supposed connections between the Red chant and Sukuna’s downfall seem forced and exaggerated.

Despite some similarities between Sukuna and Gojo’s characters, such as their roles as the most powerful sorcerers, there is minimal correlation between Sukuna and Gojo’s Red attack. Foreshadowing the downfall of the King of Curses through this attack would be an odd decision and likely not understood by most readers.

Final thoughts

Although it may be a popular theory among the Jujutsu Kaisen community, the idea that Gojo’s Red attack chant foreshadows Sukuna’s downfall is not supported by much evidence at this time.
