Popular chess YouTuber GothamChess has grown tired of viewers making misogynistic comments about female players during his streams.
Levy ‘GothamChess’ Rozman is a renowned chess YouTuber who is determined to achieve the title of Grandmaster by participating in a range of tournaments.
The content creator has been live streaming his games, with his most recent tournament being the Spilimbergo Open held in Italy.
In the fourth round of the tournament, Rozman faced off against Polish professional Liwia Jarocka and managed to achieve a draw while playing with the black pieces. However, his viewers’ remarks about his opponent during his live stream caused considerable backlash.
The segment starts at 1:00.
Rozman was so upset by the misogynistic remarks that he received that he began his latest video analyzing the match by slamming those users.
“I would like to begin by addressing something that greatly disappointed me,”he stated before discussing the game. He expressed his disappointment regarding the live stream comments made against both him and his female opponent in the first and second rounds of the game, respectively, stating that the comments were appalling.
GothamChess reiterated that the comments expressed a complete disregard for his opponent, himself, and the integrity of the game of chess.
“The quality of live stream chats is consistently poor. Many participants engage in trolling behavior and their comments are often offensive. It is important to remember that some of these commenters may be young and not fully aware of the impact of their words online. However, if any adults are also involved in this behavior, it is concerning and they should reconsider their actions. Time is precious and should not be wasted on negative and harmful behavior.”
The content creator also asserted that sexist actions negatively impact the chess community by discouraging women from participating due to the prevalence of abuse and sexual comments directed towards them.
GothamChess was furious about his chat’s comments.
Rozman implored his audience to consider how they would feel if their own sister, mother, or grandmother were subjected to the same treatment as the players on his stream, and how they would respond.
On Reddit, GothamChess discussed the problem further and clarified that it is “extremely difficult to completely moderate.”
“He stated that whenever a woman appears on screen during a chess livestream, it elicits this type of response. He is actively trying to put an end to it.”
