Dramas about drug lords have always fascinated audiences, even more so when it comes to biopics. Narcos thus exploded audience records upon its release, and the series was quickly entitled to a spin-off sequel under the title of Narcos Mexico. To the delight of fans, the creative team of the two programs has returned to tackle not one, but a drug lord: the terrible Griselda Blanco.
Starring Sofia Vergara in the lead role, the series follows “cunning and ambitious Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco” as she “creates one of the most profitable cartels in history.” We are promised to explore the psychology of the characters, and to delve into the reasons which pushed the woman to turn to this lucrative, but illegal and fatally dangerous trade.
However, even before the first episodes are broadcast, the streaming giant finds itself sued by the heirs of Griselda Blanco. For what?
Griselda: Netflix sued by drug lord’s son
According to a report from Rolling Stone, Netflix is being sued by one of Griselda Blanco’s surviving sons for stealing her “work private literary and artistic.”
In Michael Sepulveda Blanco’s view, star Sofia Vergara and Griselda’s executive producers – including Eric Newman – allegedly stole his “artistic literary work,” causing “irreparable harm” and “harming his reputation in the entertainment community.” entertainment” since he would not have received any credit.
Michael Blanco filed a 10-page motion, claiming the series uses “private narratives” shared by two of his former partners with Netflix without his consent, with the original partnership agreement dating back to 2009.
The motion seeks to invoke a temporary injunction, which is a provisional order prohibiting any action until a trial takes place or an agreement has been reached.
It is also suggested that Blanco “dedicated several years to painstakingly documenting the private accounts of his life, as well as those of his mother, with the intention of publishing a book and developing a Spanish soap opera.”
At this point, neither star Sofia Vergara, the creative team, nor Netflix have commented on Michael Sepulveda Blanco’s complaint.
The Griselda series is still awaited on Netflix: it will be available from January 25, 2024 on the streaming platform.
