Rockstar Games has recently dismantled a highly anticipated mod for GTA 5 that enabled players to explore the iconic Liberty City, a project that modders dedicated years to meticulously develop.
The modding community surrounding GTA 5 is known for its creativity and technical proficiency. Earlier this year, these talented individuals successfully recreated Liberty City from GTA IV, transforming it into an operational, interactive environment within GTA 5.
With this mod, players had the unique opportunity to fly to Liberty City, immersing themselves in a version of New York that featured exclusive vehicles, a working subway system, and intricately designed cityscapes.
However, the excitement was short-lived. On January 15, following discussions with Rockstar, the mod was taken offline, confirming the worst fears of its dedicated player base.

The Discord post stated, “Due to the unexpected attention our project received and after speaking with Rockstar Games, we have decided to take down the Liberty City Preservation Project. We appreciate all the support that the project has received and we look forward to continuing to pursue our passion for modding the Grand Theft Auto series.”
This incident is not an isolated one; Rockstar has previously dismantled fan-driven projects in the past, particularly those related to remakes of titles from the classic GTA series, such as GTA 3 and Vice City, which were halted right before the problematic launch of the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition.
The decision to shut down the mod has stirred significant anger within the gaming community, leading to widespread disappointment expressed across various social media platforms.
“I can’t say that I’m surprised. But, I am very disappointed,” commented one player.
Rockstar Games have shut down the GTA5 Liberty City Preservation Project mod that was years in development and had thousands of in-game events too. This is one of the coolest mods I’ve ever f**king seen why is Rockstar so against the modding community. Unfortunate pic.twitter.com/9DoKHpMrcC

Another contributor lamented, “Rockstar Games have shut down the GTA 5 Liberty City Preservation Project mod that was years in development and had thousands of in-game events too. This is one of the coolest mods I’ve ever f**king seen why is Rockstar so against the modding community? Unfortunate.”
Adding to the discontent, YouTuber LegacyKilla expressed dissatisfaction with Rockstar’s treatment of modders, stating, “Take Two has struck again. Outside of Nintendo, Take Two & Rockstar have got to be the worst to their community.”
This controversial move comes at a time when fans are eagerly awaiting news regarding GTA 6, using the Liberty City experience to occupy their time while hoping for updates on the next installment of the beloved franchise.
