GTA 6: A dev accidentally leaks the length of the story

A GTA 6 developer accidentally revealed details about Rockstar’s recent work on the highly anticipated game, confirming some big features and development progress.

In late 2023, Rockstar Games finally confirmed that GTA 6 was indeed real by revealing a trailer for the highly anticipated next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series.

Since then, Rockstar and Take-Two – their publishers – have remained silent on details despite promises of updates. There have been rumors that the game, scheduled to release in 2025, could be pushed back to 2026 due to development issues. However, it seems on track for 2025.

Rockstar recently urged its development teams around the world to return to office work rather than working from home due to security concerns. Yet leaks continue to occur.

This includes a recent leak from a developer at Rockstar’s main office – Rockstar North in Edinburgh – which revealed some details about recent work done on GTA 6.

In a small screenshot, the work instructions for the development team show that they are “finalizing weather dynamics, particularly thunderstorms.”

This includes working on “NPC behavior and activities” that change over time. In previous GTA titles, as soon as the rain started, the streets would empty. In GTA 6, however, it seems like things should be a little more populated.

Additionally, the developer’s instructions show that they have been working on bug fixes for “J+L” , which appears to refer to Jason and Lucia – the two protagonists of GTA 6’s story.

The mention of 40 hours was interpreted by some fans as a nod to the length of the story. However, it seems like that’s just enough time for each developer’s bug fixes.
