GTA Online is currently incompatible with the Steam Deck due to the integration of anti-cheat software, but Rockstar Games may have a pathway to rectify this situation.
On September 18, Rockstar made a surprising move by updating Grand Theft Auto Online to include BattlEye anti-cheat software. While many players had long requested an anti-cheat system, the implementation has prevented Steam Deck users from enjoying the multiplayer aspect of the game.
The developers detailed in the Update 1.69 patch notes that the Steam Deck’s lack of BattlEye support means that GTA Online is not playable on the handheld device.
“You will be able to play GTAV Story Mode but unable to play GTA Online,” an FAQ section indicates.
However, Steam Deck owners shouldn’t lose hope entirely, as many other games utilizing BattlEye remain functional on the platform.
The core of the issue is linked to Proton, a compatibility tool allowing Windows games to operate on Linux-based systems like the Steam Deck.
Due to the limitations of Proton, the BattlEye anti-cheat system does not properly function with the Valve handheld, resulting in the current issues with GTA Online. However, The Verge has highlighted that a solution to this predicament is already available.
Steam disclosed in a 2021 update that developers merely needed to contact BattlEye to enable Proton integration for their games. “No additional work is required by the developer besides that communication.”
This means that developers simply need to opt-in, and several have already taken this step. By the conclusion of 2021, supported titles included popular games like ARK: Survival Evolved, DayZ, and Planetside 2.
If the situation remains unchanged, Rockstar Games should also be able to opt-in to allow Steam Deck players to continue enjoying GTA Online, even amidst the anti-cheat measures. Whether Rockstar will take this step remains uncertain.
Previously, other developers, including Bungie, have opted against enabling such compatibility. For instance, Destiny 2 does not support the Steam Deck due to the studio’s security apprehensions.
