In 2024, Age of Mythology: Retold was released and quickly became one of the top games of the year. Playing Age of Mythology Retold on the Steam Deck
Despite having a playable rating on Steam Deck, Age of Mythology: Retold does not run immediately. In order for the game to run, you must opt into the Steam Beta client update and select a specific proton version.
- First, go into the Steam Deck settings, and select the System tab. Here, under Beta Participation, select Beta instead of Stablenext to System Update Channel
- Restart the device, and apply the new client update
- Now, head over to your library, and select Age of Mythology: Retold, followed by the settings cogwheel
- In Compatability, check “Force the user of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” and select the latest version of Proton GE
Following that, Age of Mythology: Retold should function as usual. We anticipate an update to the Stable branch that includes the necessary proton version, but for the time being, this is the recommended course of action.
Despite some mixed controller support, the game surprisingly runs well on the Steam Deck. By enabling FSR and using the high preset, players can have a decent experience.
