Guide to Acquiring the Gryphon in Destiny 2’s Heavy Metal Event

Destiny 2 has introduced an exciting new element to its gameplay with The Gryphon, the game’s first collectible weaponized vehicle. However, players should act quickly to secure this unique Sparrow, as the opportunity is limited.

Starting on May 9, 2025, Guardians can participate in the Heavy Metal mode, a fresh and exclusive PvP experience that will only be available for a short duration. Unlike the previous Rite of the Nine event, this mode has an even tighter timeline for completion.

Bungie has not confirmed if Heavy Metal will return in the future, which means players have a limited timeframe to earn The Gryphon. To unlock this exclusive vehicle, players must complete the event by May 16, 2025.

Fast-Tracking Your Gryphon Acquisition

To obtain The Gryphon, players must reach Rank 15 on the Heavy Metal Rewards Track. This process requires accumulating Event XP by engaging in Heavy Metal matches and fulfilling various Challenges.

While wins in PvP matches yield more Event XP, the most significant source of progression comes from completing Daily and Weekly Challenges, which provide substantial XP bonuses and should be your primary focus.

Daily and Weekly missions in Heavy Metal significantly boost your Event XP.

To enhance your progress, consider using Reroll Chips, which you can earn through the event track. These chips allow you to reroll any Daily Challenge, proving especially beneficial for challenges that involve random elements, such as piloting specific vehicles across multiple matches.

By completing all Daily and Weekly challenges and playing additional matches afterwards, you should easily reach Rank 15 and unlock The Gryphon.

Evaluating The Gryphon’s Effectiveness

While The Gryphon is a unique addition to the Destiny 2 landscape, it won’t dramatically alter the game’s established meta. Most endgame activities do not permit vehicles, limiting the Gryphon’s usage to less competitive scenarios.

The Gryphon’s weapon properties adapt based on your Guardian’s equipped Super.

The Gryphon features weaponry that can shift elemental properties, changing projectile types according to your equipped Super. The elemental effects include:

  • Void: Inflicts Volatile damage
  • Arc: Blinds adversaries
  • Solar: Applies Scorch effect
  • Stasis: Freezes opponents
  • Strand: Suspends enemies

Initial evaluations indicate that the Gryphon’s damage output is somewhat weak, particularly against more robust enemy types. Though the elemental versatility is intriguing, it doesn’t provide a compelling reason to remain mounted on the vehicle and forego other weaponry and abilities during combat.

The low damage seems to be a deliberate choice by Bungie, allowing players to experiment with the concept of weaponized vehicles in a less impactful setting. While The Gryphon may not be essential, it serves as an interesting alternative to Sparrows and Skimmers, offering a fun way to engage weaker foes during patrol activities.
