Guide to Adjusting Resolution in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Remastered

The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered package revives two beloved chapters from the acclaimed franchise, showcasing enhanced graphics in line with recent remastering efforts from Aspyr. The system requirements for the PC version are minimal, and while the performance is consistently excellent, players may find their graphical customization options limited. Fortunately, resolution adjustments can still be made externally, and this guide explains how to do so.

How to Change the Resolution in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Remastered

Similar to the Tomb Raider Remastered collection, Aspyr has not included graphical settings in the Soul Reaver remaster, resulting in a default resolution that matches your desktop settings—a setup that may not suit everyone. To customize your game resolution, follow the simple methods outlined below:

Using a Launch Command

To specify a custom resolution for the Steam or GOG versions of the game, you can utilize a launch command. For instance, if you wish to set the game to run at 900p, follow these steps:

  • Open your Steam library and right-click on Legacy of Kain™ Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered, then select Properties.
  • Navigate to the General tab. In the LAUNCH OPTIONS field, enter the command:

-width 1600 -height 900

  • You can adjust the resolution parameters as desired; the above setting is for a resolution of 1600×900.
  • Once the settings are applied, launch Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered and press Alt + Enter to switch to Windowed mode.

During my tests, various resolutions—including 800 x 600, 1280 x 720, and 1600 x 900—were successfully rendered within the game, though minor visual issues such as texture culling might occur in menus and introductory sequences.

Keep in mind that using the game in Windowed mode means you will have to deal with resolution limitations whenever you switch back to Fullscreen mode, as it will revert to your current desktop resolution. Unfortunately, even using utilities like Borderless Gaming won’t retain your selected resolution when switching between display modes.

For GOG users, similar launch parameters can be added, allowing for the same custom resolutions.

Adjusting the Desktop Resolution

If you’re not keen on playing in Windowed mode and don’t mind frequently altering your desktop configuration, you can change your desktop resolution through Windows settings. The game will automatically adapt to your updated resolution, although this adjustment must be repeated each time you start the game.

It would be beneficial if developers could include resolution options in future updates, as this is an essential feature for any PC game. While the title performs admirably on a range of systems, including the Steam Deck, the lack of user-configurable options can be a limitation for dedicated PC gamers.
