Recently screened footage of Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming adaptation of Frankenstein suggests that the film will incorporate profound religious themes and visual motifs, particularly as Victor Frankenstein breathes life into his creation. This revelation emerged during a large preview event held by Netflix, where an array of exciting updates about their upcoming titles was shared.
At this event, audiences were not only treated to insights about Squid Game Season 3, plans for Stranger Things creators post-Season 5, and details about the second season of The Sandman but also an exclusive greeting from Del Toro himself. Speaking from his Bleak House, he provided a glimpse into his vision for this long-awaited project.
Del Toro’s Deep Obsession with Frankenstein
Before unveiling the footage, Guillermo Del Toro expressed his deep-rooted connection to the Frankenstein tale, stating, “This film has been on my mind since I was a child; for 50 years. And I’ve been trying to make it for 20-25 years. Some might even say I am a little obsessed with Frankenstein.”

As he spoke, a collection of Frankenstein memorabilia surrounded him, symbolizing his lifelong passion. Del Toro continued, “Over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this. I hope you enjoy this small look at Frankenstein.”
The teaser itself highlighted Victor Frankenstein’s intense obsession with revitalizing the dead, featuring Christoph Waltz as a wealthy benefactor who supports Victor’s endeavors, accompanied by Mia Goth, portraying an aristocrat who ridicules his ambitions. One striking moment in the trailer depicts the creature coming to life, positioned in a crucifix stance—symbolically laden imagery that Del Toro is known to embrace.
The creature’s design, reminiscent of intricately crafted clockwork, combines mechanical elements with flesh and bone, highlighted by its glowing red eyes. A poignant moment echoes a line from Mary Shelley’s novel, as the creature states, “My maker told his tale. Then I will tell you mine.” This artful nod to the original text enriches the adaptation’s context.
Another intriguing scene features Goth’s character gazing upon the monster with apparent fascination, hinting at potential connections to the iconic Bride of Frankenstein. While this remains speculative, the official Netflix synopsis sets the stage effectively: “Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant yet egotistical scientist who animates a creature in a grotesque experiment, ultimately leading to the downfall of both creator and creation.”
Mark your calendars, as Frankenstein is set to premiere on Netflix in November 2025.
