T1’s recent decision to bench talented ADC Gumayusi in favor of newcomer Smash stirred up considerable controversy. Although Smash displayed robust gameplay during his time with the Challengers team, the organization has once again opted to reinstate Gumayusi to the starting roster.
This notable roster change didn’t follow the conventional procedures of analysis by coaching staff. Instead, T1’s CEO, Joe Marsh, intervened personally to ensure Gumayusi’s return to the starting lineup. This unprecedented move—where an organization’s owner overrides coaching decisions—has painted a dramatic picture in the esports landscape.
T1 CEO Intervenes with Strong Stance
In his official statement, Marsh addressed T1 fans, shedding light on both the rationale behind this decision and the ongoing internal discussions concerning roster dynamics. He emphasized that the silence regarding these changes was not a reflection of disregard for the fans, but rather a measure of careful deliberation.
“I understand many of you have been frustrated by our silence regarding roster changes and the possibility of a six-man lineup, ” he clarified.“Please know that this was never out of disregard for our fans, but rather due to ongoing internal discussions between management and our coaching staff.”
Marsh continued, “I have complete trust in ‘Becker’, ‘kkOma’, and the coaching team. After extensive dialogue with them, I have insisted on the inclusion of ‘Gumayusi’ in the starting lineup as the regular season approaches. This decision was not made lightly – but as CEO, I must prioritize long-term success and the best interests of T1.”

Despite his stellar performance, which positioned him as one of the league’s top ADCs, Smash has found himself on the bench. Marsh assured fans that while Gumayusi will hold the starting position, Smash’s talent remains valuable to the team.
Marsh further elaborated on the rationale behind testing Smash, noting his exceptional display during the Challengers cup. In perspective, this rookie debut was among the most remarkable in LCK history. However, Marsh believes in Gumayusi’s potential to reclaim his status among the elite ADCs.
“He has earned the right to prove himself once again as one of the world’s best [ADCs].I once said that ‘Gumayusi’ bled black and red, and I stand by that. His loyalty to T1 is undeniable, and this decision honors that commitment, ” Marsh asserted.
This shift comes at a tumultuous time for T1, especially following the shocking acquisition of Zeus by Hanwha Life Esports, which left the organization reeling. The fallout from this trade has been significant, drawing criticisms aimed at both Zeus’s agent and HLE for the manner in which the transaction unfolded.
